I know I already posted this over in networking, but I really need to know if anyone out there using netscape is having flash problems. As some of you know, I use netscape. A friend of mine is also using netscape (an older version) and we are both having problems (although different) with our netscape browser. Is there anyone else having problems with netscape. I don't want to do a clean install, as I have too much to lose. :(

I myself used netscape up till last week and i had no problems. I just switched to firefox. If you have to reinstall netscape just export your bookmarks and you will be fine. As far as saved passwords i dont know if you can save those, but it shouldnt be hard to enter it once and then ur set.

    Timbers,
I have Netscape 7.1 loaded and working.

    What's your problem?
Give me some sites you have probs with and I'll check 'em for you.

Have you gone back to the MM site and let it check your installation?

Wisewiz at first I thought it was damage done by trojan.byteverify, as I had seem to pick it up somewhere along the way, but my friend can not open his mail in hotmail. My problem is with flash required sites such as:
    http://www.angelrays.com/
    http://www.monsterland.se/crunchtime/
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/webplay/games/display.shtml?game=halloween

I have been running both browsers so to access certain sites, but I really don't like explorer. I do have my netscape security settings adjusted tight, but even after I re-adjusted them, it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Just tried to access another site, and could not get content. This it the explaination I recieved. I have re-installed all the media players, although micromedia does not seem to install properly.

Help! I can't view content on the site.
If you try to view or listen to content and nothing shows up, chances are you need to install or update a media player on your computer, and/or update your Web browser. ZeD only accepts standard, widely-used media file formats, all of which can be played on the free, downloadable media players below. So check out what kind of file you were trying to view and consider downloading the appropriate media player: [insert Media Player table here] If you have the correct player(s) installed and you're still having problems, contact us at bugs@zed.cbc.ca and we'll do our best to help. You can also check out ZeD's tech support group, ZeD's Media Guide, to post any tech-related question to our tech support guru BruceLu.

Well, I have re-installed Netscape 7.02 over it's self. Tried to install micromedia once again. I have realized that that stupid firebird browser I installed and un-installed has left residual icons on stuff, and I can't seem to shake them. Other than that, things are still the same. I tend to think the problem is in the Netscape browser or the netscape server. Wish other netscape users in the North Eastern areas would respond.

Not sure what you want North Eastern users (I'm one, in Ontario) to do for you, friend.

Firebird uninstalls clean. But you have to manage your Profiles folders carefully, and delete the Phoenix folder completely. Netscape uses the Mozilla profiles folder, not the Phoenix folder. And open Netscape and designate it as your default browser. A few reboots later, all of the Firebird browser icons will be gone and the NS icon will be on all of your Web site shortcuts and .html files. If not, fix that in Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, Fiel Types, .html.

Wisewiz I just played with this thing till water squirted from my eyes. I am running windows 98 SE. I have no idea what version of explorer I am running but I am sure it is current. The fact that I was stupid enough to load firebird into this computer still befuddle me as I have assignments and lessons on this thing. I can not reformat as my burner is dead. If you have any other suggestions I am open to them. As for the Phoenix folder, I am hoping to delete it as soon as I know for a fact that there is no other programs using it. Scared that if I delete, programs will not run properly.

Reason for looking for users in North East...Thought maybe it was Netscape server problems to certain sections.

Wisewiz, just noticed your location....lol, is your initials E.R.? If so, I am just a few igloos down the road.

(I'm not E.R., but my igloo's in Kingston, Ont.)

You can delete the entire Phoenix folder in W98SE, in Windows\Application Data\. NOthing else uses anything in that folder. Guaranteed.
BUT. Find your bookmarks file and your cookies file (if you save any permanently for places like MG) and save those two files somewhere else before you dump the Phoenix folder.

    AND

A good way to re-create and jumpstart your Netscape is this:
If there's a shortcut already in your Start Menu - Programs, for Netscape Profile Manager, use it. If not, ...
Make a copy on your desktop of your Netscape shortcut from your Start Menu - Programs. Right click the new shortcut, Properties, and add this after the filename (in the Target line that will be highlighted when you open the shortcut's properties):
    a space, then a hyphen, then a p
Shd say netscp.exe -p when you're done. Now OK and use that shortcut.

In Profile Manager, use the buttons and follow the directions to create a NEW profile and give it a name that's different from the old name that's already listed for you (might just be Default, if you haven't changed it, -- or if Default is really your name!). Now select the new name and use the Open Netscape button. Netscape will open with none of the old settings (or screwups) of the old profile, and you can fine tune this new version to suit you. You can copy your old bookmarks and cookies to the new profile, too. Just copy and paste the bookmarks.html and cookies.txt files from the old profile in Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\ to the corresponding locations in the NEW one. Be sure to CLOSE the browser before you add files to its profiles, tho.

Worth a try, and only takes a few mins.

OK, tell me what else, exactly, you want suggestions FOR. What do you want to do now?

Well Wisewiz, too bad you weren't just down the road. Your too far south for me to bring my computer to get you to figure it out. lol

Major problem is the fact that shockwave flash (although enabled and installed) is not picking up flash pages. Still not sure what is going on with it. Works fine with explorer browser, but netscape not loading pictures. Is it possible that when I had the trojan.byteverify, that it may have damaged something. I can't see it being netscape program, as I have installed it over and over again. I don't think it is micromedia flash, as I installed that one numerous of times too. Just not sure what is going on. I hate running explorer, but lately I have been running both browser. Any comments? Would it be my service provider (possible glitch)?

It's more likely to be something that's corrupted in Netscape or something wrong with your settings in Netscape.
Can't be your ISP if you're getting the stuff in Explorer. Both your browsers are using the same ISP, of course.
Wantcha ta try something for me. I want you to delete a Netscape file. Netscape will re-create it the next time you start NS, so don't worry about it.

Close Netscape completely, so that no NS windows are open and no parts of it are in the taskbar. If you use that tray icon (Quick Start), turn it off, too. I want NOTHING that comes from Netscape running. If in doubt about anything, come back and ask FIRST.

You should have your Explorer set to Show All Files (including hidden files and System files and folders), and you should set your Explorer in View in the menu bar to Details. And of course it should be set to show all file extensions. All of those settings are under Tools, Folder options, on the View tab. Click Apply when you have everything set. Then OK.

Now, with Netscape not running AT ALL, open your Netscape folder in Explorer and open the components folder inside it and find the file named compreg.dat. It will have a date that's different from all the other files around it. Might even be today's date. Delete the file named compreg.dat. Close the folders and close your Explorer window.

Now launch Netscape and go back to one of those sites you were having trouble with and see whether it works.

And come back and let me know. Please.

Wisewiz I can honestly say that did not help at all. Although I got this message when trying to access angelrays.com:
    Not Found
The requested URL /base.html was not found on this server.
    Apache/1.3.27 Server at www.angelrays.com Port 80

Not sure if removing compreg.dat had anything to do with it. By the way, what was that file for?

  13. Wisewiz

    Wisewiz Apprentice's Sorcerer

OK, timbers. Sorry that didn't do it. It was along shot. That file is a storehouse of information on images processed and downloaded. If it gets corrupted, various parts of the management of images fail. If you look now, you'll see that you have a brand new one. The file had nothing to do with your error message at the angelrays site. It's just a record. But like a Temp file record, it can foul things up mightily.

Well, I know you've tried re-installing Netscape and you've tried re-installing Macromedia, and you've tried changing to a new profile, ... but I'm sure that Netscape and Macromedia both work, so I'm also sure that there's something wrong with YOUR installation, SO ...

Here's the thing. I'm ALMOST absolutely sure that whatever is wrong with your Netscape and your Flash would be cured completely by TOTAL removal of all of the Netscape, Mozilla, Phoenix, Macromedia, Downloaded Program Files (ActiveX controls), and GRE components from your files, and a fresh, clean installation of Netscape 7.1 and the latest Macromedia software.

    But, ...

That would take a few minutes of work, and you'd have to do the WHOLE thing, or you'd get nowhere, simply because a "clean" installation over "just a few" bits of the old installation is a DIRTY installation. The only exception is that you can back up your own data files (Bookmarks, Cookies, Mailboxes, etc.) to ANOTHER folder that will NOT be involved in the cleaning and re-installation, and then wehn the clean install is done and tested, you can add those old files back in, over the new, empty ones.

If ya wanna give it a try, I'll scan my machine and give you a list of the things you have to remove. It's too easy to miss something and mess up the whole attempt. For instance, hardly anybody notices that Netscape slaps about 20 MB of files into Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\ on most installations. The Gecko Runtime Environment files may not even get installed, but they're there if NS or FFox needs them.

Lemme know if you 1) wanta try, 2) wanta know what you can save elsewhere and copy back later, or 3) want any outside help.

Wisewiz, I do thank you for all your help. I think I will have to reformat (nightmare city) this computer. Hb isn't helpful in that task, so I was trying to not have to do it.

I tend to wonder if I it was due to a bad install of the netscape 7.1. It was fine up until that point. I had problems with that program and that's why I tried the firebird that I heard so much about (found it to be a glorified version of explorer). After removing the firebird, installing 7.02, that's when more problems arose. Anyway, this gal is going to throw in the towel and plan to reformat in April when I have a bit more time.

Thank you for all the help. Hope you don't mind that if I should ever have any problems that leave me puzzled, that I call on you. ;)

I agree that it WAS a bad install, compounded by re-installs. That's why I think removing the whole Netscape/Firebird/Phoenix/Mozilla/Whatever else ... would fix it. But that's just an educated guess.

    It's all your call.

Call on me and on us as needed. We're ready to help when we can. Good luck.
