Network but no Internet

I recently removed some trojans from my computer. The viruses are gone now, but the process left the computer unable to connect to the Internet. It connects to the network just fine through ethernet cables, and other computers can connect, but this one has a problem. I'm running Windows XP.

The device manager tells me that the registry configuration information for the network drivers are incomplete or damaged, so I tried to uninstall the network drivers so that they could be reinstalled. They cannot be uninstalled because "the device may be required to boot up the computer."

The network drivers are Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller - WinpkFilter Miniport, Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection - WinpkFilter Miniport, WAN Miniport (IP) - WinpkFilter Miniport, and WAN Miniport (Network Monitor) - WinpkFilter Miniport.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Steve

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode (tapping F8 key at start up) and removing from there?
An alternate is to download drivers on a different machine and transfer to your machine by thumb drive/CD and running Update driver from Device Manager and pointing at new driver.

    Yes, it did not help.

I tried downloading the Broadcom drivers to a thumb drive, but the "Update Driver" in the device manager would not let me install it, as the current driver is the best available or something. The problem is apparently the registry configuration information for the drivers, rather than the drivers themselves.

If you can connect to the network but not the internet, the network controller drivers are not the problem.

Many viruses establish a proxy in your browser. To check, open IE and go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings. In the LAN Settings window, make sure none of the boxes are ticked, close the window and browser and try the browser again.

If that doesn't work, it may be a winsock problem. At the command prompt type:

    netsh winsock reset catalog

    and hit enter.

Check the proxy first, it thats the problem the winsock repair won't fix it.

IE and Firefox are both set not to use proxies. The virus did change them, but I changed them back. They are still set not to use proxies. That's not the problem.

Then I ran the command that you suggested, and that also did nothing.

The device manager shows a yellow "!" on those network adapters, and under "Properties," says that the registry configuration information for the network adapters are incomplete or damaged (Code 19), but they cannot be uninstalled and reinstalled because "the device may be required to boot up the computer."

I guess you need to define what you mean by "It connects to the network just fine through ethernet cables" If the device manager says the driver is corrupt or incomplete and it is showing a yellow exclamation, you should not be on the local network either. The network controller either works or it doesn't. The driver doesn't have the ability to decide what devices you can connect to, it either gets an IP address and works or it doesn't.

    First, thank you for responding.
I mean that I can see the directories of the other computers in the network and can download files from those computers, and the other computers can connect to the Internet, but I cannot access the Internet from the problem computer.

The Device Manager shows four items under "Network Adapters":
    1394 Net Adapter (working properly)
Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller - WinpkFilter Miniport (not working)
Intel(R) 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection (working properly)
WAN Miniport (IP) - WinpkFilter Miniport (not working)

On the ones that are not working properly, under "Properties," the "Device status" is: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

The troubleshooter says to uninstall the device driver so that Windows can find it and reinstall it, but if I try to uninstall, I get this message: "Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up the computer."

Under "Network Connections" I see two, "1394 Connection" and "Local Area Connection 6." Local Area Connection 6 connects using the Intel device (which is working properly) and the DHCP has assigned it an IP address. The 1394 Connection connects using "1394 Net Adapter" (which is working properly), but no IP address is assigned. If I click "repair," it says: "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection. Cannot proceed." However, in the "1394 Connection properties" window, the items used by the connection include "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)".

I don't know what to do next.

    Thanks,
    Steve

It would appear that you have two network controllers. A Broadcom and an Intel, both gigabit. Do you have two ethernet cables going to the Router?

One of the two controllers must be an add on card. Either try removing the add on controller or disabling the onboard controller in the bios. I would suggest trying to figure out which is which and do whatever is necessary to disable the Broadcom being the Intel seems to have the correct drivers installed.
