Do you connect via a VPN (Virtual Private Network)?

I still do not understand why your connection is showing as Local Area Connection 2. If it is 2 there should be a Local Area Connection 1. Tell me everything that shows in the Network Connections window.

Also did you say that if you connect your PC everything works fine?
Try using the same cable plugged into your boyfriend's PC on yours. Does that work too? If this all works, you can at least rule out the external hardware and cables.

Did you also say you can now ping the router from your boyfriend's PC?

From a command prompt, type in the below and attach the info back here:
    ipconfig /all

Right click on the top bar of the command prompt window to see Edit options where you can Mark and then Copy.

Yes I have done all this (used his cable on my comp etc..)

Did you also say you can now ping the router from your boyfriend's PC? I do not know what ping the router means, but I can ping 127.0.0.1 with no error..

Going to get you ipconfig info...be right back

Pinging 127.0.0.1 is a local loopback. That means you are just pinging yourself.

The router has an IP address and the PC should be getting assigned an IP address via the DHCP server in the router. The PC and router must be on the same subnet. (example: PC = 192.168.1.10 , router = 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask = 255.255.255.0)

Is there a way for me to figure out the IP addy of the router?

Try it again. This should work. If not, you do not have malware problems. I would expect, either your drivers are corrupted or your network interface card is broken, or something is wrong with the Windows installation. Also try looking under the Properties of the LAN2 connection for into.

    HI chas

ok so does this mean i need to head to a different thread now? cause i cant find that info in the properties od the LAN2...I find 1 ip address, but i cant seem to see anywhere it tells me if it is for the computer or the router...

and what do I do with the fact that there is no LAN1?

It didnt work, I tried it 4 or five times now...

We havent changed the windows install at all. We have been running in this configuration for almost a year with no issues. (by configuration, I mean the way its hooked up - not nessasarily the LAN2 item)

How do I determine if drivers are corrupt or interface card is broken?

Try the Software Forum (possibly the Hardware or Networking forum - but only choose one) for your issues.

If you do not know how to uninstall and reinstall drivers for your NIC, they have more time to focus on these kind of problems then we do here in the Malware Forum.
