Hi hope someone can help before I run out of hair

    Here is the problem

    Windows Xp Home sp2

I had a virus (stupidly don't know which as AVG removed it and I thought end of problem. Ha!)

Symptoms are as follows, machine will boot fine while not networked but the moment it is attached to router all network functions cease. including Ping commands and ipconfig. Also IE does not start when networked (nor does messenger or any other internet prog).

    Have tried so far

Running various netshell commands which all cause netsh.exe to crash
    Winsockxpfix causes error in netsh.exe
    tried system file checker
    tried complete xp repair install
tried uninstalling all network adapters and reinstalling
    tried uninstalling tcp/ip
tried ipconfig /flushdns then /regsiterdns(this brought brief success as we were able to ip config but IE failed then ipconfig failed again)
tried replacing netsh.exe and netsh dll files
disabled DEP as this was causing an error in winsockxpfix
network worked fine in safe mode once, now machine won't boot to safe mode
    scanned with AVG, Superantispyware, smitfraudfix

I would prefer not to scrub and reinstall mostly out of stubborness now.

    Hijack log below

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 11:58:12, on 23/12/2008
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
    MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)

It may be time to abandon the stubbornness, make sure your important data is backed up, and format and reload your OS. I was working on a PC with a very similar scenario: it had some similar network/internet problems caused by malware which was completely removed (7 different scans told me it was clean including rootkit scans). It still wouldn't open web pages. In my scenario, I could ping, I could ipconfig (incl. /release and /renew), I tried all the same things you did (Winsock fixes, TCP/IP re-install, network adapter re-install, different USB wifi adapter just to see if it would work, safe Windows repair install, etc). Nothing worked. When the repair install didn't fix the problem, I knew it was time to scrub it. I could have save a lot of frustration, time, and energy had I just bit the bullet to start with. Like you, I hate to admit defeat, and it's fairly rare that I can't fix a PC. But it happens....

    Happy Holidays! :drink

    Thanks dlb

I suppose deep down in my processor I suspected that would be the case, I have hunted forums high and low I can't find anyone with similar circumstances. But now I have two with identical problems. A friend called me an hour ago and lo and behold he has exact same problem, he can't remember having a virus, but the symptoms are absolutely identical. I will persevere for a day or so and see what I can do, I will post if I have success

    thanks for the reply though

Hey I think it could be your avg. I had a similar problem and was relying on my avg thinking it should fix the problem! Ha it was avg that caused it!! I have now fixed about 6 computers stemming from avg problems. Not the older versions just the newer avg versions. So my suggestion is get avast. If your avg won't let you uninstall that is a sure sign it's the problem. If it's the problem I think it could be it will start shutting down as soon as it realizes you are trying to get rid of it. I would download the avast file, but don't run it, before you trash the avg. Then disconnect any and all connections to the internet and install the avast it takes some time to run but well worth it!
