Network Problem

This one is a mystery to me and I hope someone may be able to shed some light.

My PC running Win10 is connected by cable to the nearby router. It's been fine for years and now I am getting intermittent disconnections. I thought the fault may have been in Windows or even a virus so decided to restore Windows back to the last working version. That didn't fix it. Perhaps stupidly (on reflection) I decided to do a complete system restore from a ghost backup via Macrium Reflect and that didn't fix it either.

I can tell my PC to receive Internet via wi-fi so when enabled, whenever the disconnection happens (and it seems to be random) it falls back to wi-fi but it's still annoying me - a lot. There's nothing wrong with the cable - I have checked it at both ends.

I have done an ipconfig /all on both states - wired network while working then again with it not working and fallen back to wi-fi and attach the text files

    Thank you!

You have to consider that it might be a hardware failure. Considering no reinstall of Windows 10 fixed the issue.
    1. The NIC card inside the computer is going bad
    2. The cable is going bad (a visual check is not a way to test can't determine if something inside the wire is not always connecting)
    3. The port on the router is going bad.

My advice: buy a new cable, change the port on the router that the computer is plugged into.
If it still happens then either replace the NIC or buy a USB to ethernet adapter and use that instead of the internal device.

You say you checked the wire, did you use a network tester or just visual? Check for drivers for the NIC and firmware for the router or modem?
Have you rebooted the modem &/or router?

Thank you for your response. I have not used a "network tester" because I do not know what what is. I don't know how to perform the check for drivers thing either. The router is absolutely fine as it serves other devices without any problem.

Thank you - I have tried switching the network cables on the back of the router - there are only two ports (two devices are hard-wired) proving only that there's nothing wrong with the router, as the secondary device was happy with its new plug-in position and working fine.

"change the port on the router that the computer is plugged into." - I don't know how to do that.

    3. Yes - definitely going bad.

Okay - for anyone who may be interested - the solution to my problem (which I just stumbled upon) was just to go to the NIC in the Device Manager and "Update Driver". LOL

Did you stumble on the 3rd post??

Sorry, the instruction wasn't specific enough for me to know what to do. I'm about a 4 out of 10 in nerdiness. If you'd said:
    1 Open the Device Manager
2 Go to the Network card
3 Right click and choose "update driver"

    that would have been helpful!

However, I am restrospectively grateful for your response. Thank you!

No problem Jim, if at anytime you need 'us' to be more specific, you can ask what we mean by...., or there is the site 'we' use (but like to keep secret) its called google.com, if you type a phrase in there, it will usually give you more in depth instructions... don't let that get around, we'll all be out of work!

Aha! A search engine - what a novel idea.
Don't worry - I shall keep it under my hat!
