    hello.

    i was wondering how can i know my real ip, say..if i want to ping my computer from another pc that is outside my network. I am getting internet connection from a wireless router, which at the same time gets the connection from a dsl modem:

    dls modem (ip unknown-> wireless router (192.168.0.1) -> network (192.168.0.2 - 192.168.255.255)

    therefore i can only see the router's ip and my own(which is the ip assigned inside the network). I suppose i have to know the ip of the dsl in order to connect to it, but since there are several computers inside the network, how will the packet know where to go once it has arrived to the dsl modem.

    Ok, say, what i want to do is to ping my computer from another computer outside my network (i.e. ftp connection)

    thanks a lot for the help.

    alex

    thank you very much for replying. I downloaded IP2 so I can know my external IP. But say, what if I want to ping my computer (which is inside a network) from the internet. If i ping the wan ip i will just be connecting to the router and not the any individual computer. thanks in advance

    First you need access to the router. If not then you are out of luck. If you can get access and you can program it then you have to set up port forwarding. Some SOHO routers call it virtual server. If it is a Cisco router or similar without a neat little web interface then you need a Cisco smart guy to telnet or console into it, change the ACL(access control list) and set up forwarding in the config. Either way, you will need to know what ports have to be forwarded to your computer within the network.

    Good luck
