Network Speeds Too Slow?

I just set up a new home network using a Linksys EA4500 (N900) router. I've got my desktop computer hardwired using a Cat5e cable and a Realtek RTL8168E NIC (Gigabit). The laptop I've been speedtesting with is running WiFi with a Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller (PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8136&SUBSYS_063E1028&REV_07) which I think is an N300, but I can't seem to find anything to support this. When I transfer files between the two machines, I'm only getting about 12 MBs (96 Mbs). Assuming the laptop card is an N300, it's obviously going to bottleneck there, but I should still be getting up to 37.5 MBs (300 Mbs). I get that that's a best case scenario speed, but 12 MBs is pretty far off the mark. I guess my first question is, can anybody find anything about the Laptop NIC? And also, if it is N300, any idea why the file transfers are so slow? While testing I didn't have anything else connected to the network except for a Canon laser printer.

    Sorry about that...

They are both Dell. Models are as follows:

    Desktop - XPS 8500
    Laptop - Inspiron 5547

Is it the same slow speed whether you transfer desktop to laptop or the other way laptop to desktop?

I transfer files the old fashioned way by USB stick. I don't have our computers sharing files between them.

    Take the laptop here http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/inspiron-15-5547-laptop/drivers
and have Dell check if the drivers are up to date.

And here for the desktop dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/xps-8500/drivers
Note: I wouldn't run Win 10 on the desktop because Dell says it hasn't been tested.

Yep same speed to/from either machine. I made sure the drivers on both machines are up to date (the desktop needed a new one, which I got right from the Realtek site...), but it didn't make any difference.
