I'm horrible at networking, googled and checked Windows help until my brain started going dim the last couple of days! I'll supply as much info as I can and I'm sure some of it will be irrelevant.;)

The Vista rig has to see the W7 rig and not needed vice-versa, though it would be nice. I use a KVM and both machines are hard-wired to a Linksys WRT54G, in Vista I have the 'Network and sharing center' options all set to on save the printer option as I don't have one configured yet.

Oh, the Vista has a PCI Ethernet card as the on board doesn't want to work and the W7 uses the on board.

On W7, I have set up a Homegroup/Workgroup and my system names and PW's are the same on both machines. At this point I get totally lost as nothing works and I'm at the end of my so-called 'expertise'.:-D:confused

Does anyone know where I can find a good simple tut or perhaps I'm missing something quite simple.

Ask and I shall provide any additional info, even screenshots as that leaves absolutely no doubt as to what's going on but I need direction as to which are important. Thanks all!

    Hi Augie

TBH I just followed this http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/networking.mspx as networking is not my area either, in honesty I may have lucked out and it just worked but two Win7 PCs and using HomeGroup worked much easier.

Make sure in Network and Sharing Center that the settings are mirrored in other PC to

    Network Discovery ~ ON
    File Sharing ~ ON
Printer Sharing ~ ON ( well I wanted to share a printer, although its wifi but 2nd Desktop is not wifi)
    Password Protected Sharing ~ ON

disable any firewall you may have and create a folder on the main PCs HDD and then right click and choose Properties and click Sharing tab and share the folder, then use other PC and try choose network and try and locate the network shared folder.

Well Halo, I borked my W7 X86 install! LOL Who would a thunk it eh?:-D roflmao ! Nothing worked after my tender attempts at networking, not even SR! Gives me a reason to install W7 X64 now.:) I really do wish I'd stop trying to remember things but writing everything down is such a pain but with this clean install I will write things down.;) Just for self defense against another OS kill. At least I'll hopefully know where I went wrong this time.:cool (Is MS still handing out RTM's for bugs, if it is one of course?):innocent More than likely a PEBKAC!

OMG, it's so bloody easy in W7 X64! One just shares it and everything else just flows man! BTW, I called the new install augie1 instead of the same augie as in Vista :eek Seems like that was the issue all along for some reason. :confused

I must have really screwed my X86 install to have to do a reformat!:-D Now I have to see how well X64 performs in folding as MS recommends two GB of RAM and I'm not buying another stick, just too expensive for me.

My mantra has always been affordable folding as some folks just go crazy and spend their rent money! I'll keep you up to date as this good fortune may not last.:-D
