I have no experience when it comes to broadband. What should i consider when purchasing a router (not wireless just standard)? I want to be able to connect 4-6 computers to this network and I just got satellite broadband internet.

When it comes to networking, internet & safety, getting a decent router/switch is a must. Since you are a noob just starting out, the easiest router that I have seen is the D-link brand. Fairly easy to setup, reliable and with 24hr tech support (not to mention most geeks know these puppies and can be helpful with little to no brain strain) these are affordable and available anywhere.

Just make sure to get one that supports 10/100 Mhz if you are not sure what speeds your network cards will support. Most systems do not use the 1 Ghz connections yet, and some older systems will only work at 10 Mhz due to older technology. Oh and make sure to ask the salespersons where you will shop if the network cable you will be buying will support up to 1 Ghz transmission speed (no need to replace cables after your next upgrade... yes?).

And make sure you have enough ports + 1 or 2 for all the computers you will be hooking up. If they are spread throughout your home, then I suggest picking up a secondary switch as well, just in case the cables can't get from the router to each pc without problems.

Mhz = Megahertz Ghz = Gigahertz
