Networking USB

I have 2 pc's one upstaird and one downstairs.

The main PC downstairs is connected to a wired router (192.168.1.1) to ADSL with an ip of 192.168.1.12 , i have also installed a W/less usb device with an ip of 169.254.153.149.

The upstairs device has only the wireless PC card with an ip address of 169.254.153.180.

I can see both computers both ways the downstairs machine is win 2k and upstairs is XP Pro browse the drives etc..

The problem is how do i setup the upstairs machine to access the internet, i have tried Analogue X Proxy on my main machine and set the browser on the upstairs machine to use the proxy of 169.254.153.149 / 192.168.1.12 / 192.168.1.1 but nothing works at all any suggestions

 

all that setup won't work like that.
did you try 'ad hoc' mode in thewireless settings??
that will setup a peer to peer network, with the clients getting dns automatically.

Yes the wireless is set up through Ad-Hoc.

To give you the exact details

Main PC hard wired into Cisco VOIP > 4 Port Router > ADSL
Other PC W/ess to main PC ad-hoc

 

169.254.153.149 is the default IP that windows assigns when the Network Card is set to Auto obtain IP, and there is no DHCP source for an IP.

I would try first to put the two computers in the same room to make sure that it is not a distance issue.

In any case while arrangement like yours will work OK for File exchange, you would have difficulties to set the Ad-Hoc Wireless to access the Internet. This type of connection (two Network cards in one PC) creates two independent networks, and you would need second Routing, you would have to use Windows ICS, and ICS does not like to be a second Router.

You are much better off getting a regular cable/DSL Router ( some are on sale for less then $20). If for some reason you can not part from your Wired Router you can use the additional Wireless cable/DSL Router as an Access Point with a Switch.

Problem sorted I connected my Main PC to connect through my Voice/IP Cisco and then a patch from my Cisco to my other 4 port router then out to the WWW.

I then just let windows find the ip of 192.168.0.18 ont he upstairs machine and all tickety boo now.
