Networking

I am a newbie at this and any help would be appreciated. (Please don't laugh at these questions) they are serious to me. Firstly I have 2 wireless network cards and wish to connect 2 computers
1/. Is there anything else I need ( hubs, routers etc) both computers are connected to the net via a Speedtouch 530 modem thru a "E -switch". I have installed both cards and drivers etc, the net is working fine but the computers can't see each other, I have shared a file on each computer but they can't see each other.

2/. I gave up on that idea and have installed a wired card with a cross-over cable but the same thing is happening. I do not know what IP numbers etc, subnet, DNS, WINS ETC to put in. I don't need both computers to the net at once, just to be able to play games against my son.

Please help if you can as I am ready to throw them out the window, also I nstalled two new cards for the x over cable
