    Hello,
I've been thinking about getting a DSL connection for my house. We have two computers and I want to connect them together in a network (connect both to the DSL connection). When I talked to a representative from one of the companies I was looking at, he said that I would need a DSL modem for the one computer, a router, and an ethernet card for the other computer. (I think.) I guess a wire will run from one computer to the other and that one will be connected to the internet. I don't want to go wireless. I actually like wired better. (Because I think it will have better bandwidth, not just for the internet but if I want to play games across it and I don't want anyone getting in on our network.)

That said, does what the guy told me make sense?

Also, each company charges extra per month for the connection. This sounds bad, but, can I set up a network for several computers and just pay for one connection. How can a DSL provider know that you have more than one computer connected to internet. Charging extra just seems really shisty to me.

Well, any advice would be great.

    thanks,
    mike

You order one regular account with a DSL Modem.

Once it is installed and working you go to your local computer store and buy a Cable/DSL Router (some are $10 on sale). You can use many computers on a single account.

You need a Network card (NIC) in each computer and you can use more than 100 hundred computers on the one account.
The system should look like this: http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg

When you install the Cable/DSL Router you need to configure it to work with a Router.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Settings, and Sharing.

Well, I've looked at the diagram and what you've said and I think I understand. It goes something like this: DSL Provider -to- External Modem -to- External Router -to- two computers with Network cards.

If this is correct, then I understand and am good to go.

Also, thanks for the help, you've made it all very simple and clear.
