Great!! Too bad that guests can't see the thanks icon and therefore cannot give their thanks when they're helped with a post. Well... one can't have everything.

J/k It must be a setting to turn on. I have seen it on other forums and it does reduce some of the abundant TY posts.

After a while it is like the ads, you ignore it.

Ooh, someone thanked me already! Considering that I don't post too often in the tech areas, this puts me on :cloud9 :-D I'll try it out for MA.

I was thinking this site could benefit from something like this.

Confession: Before I noticed the button, I actually posted a thank you. I usually don't, unless it is a very big help or I can add something with the post. Then I noticed the new button and was like "Hey, that's new! ... oops". But now I can thank people without cluttering.

 

Is the point then to get people to quit writing personal thank you's and click on a button so that they don't "boost their point count"? I didn't know that's why people wrote thank yous.

The thank you button has a feeling about it of the positive reinforcement work done by BF Skinner in the 1950s in which the rat was rewarded with some positive reinforcement after performing the wished-for action.

Thank yous are arbitrary. You can thank someone for coming here to the site and posting. You can thank someone for presenting you with an interesting problem. You can thank someone for a joke that lightened your day. You can thank someone for helping you find information. You can thank chaslang everytime he posts something.

I see it as problematic.

 

The site caters to many, not just to one. Sorry to disappoint. I suppose you could stop looking at the Thank You numbers...

I don't see it as problematic unless someone gets their britches in a twist because someone has more thank yous than they do, which would be pretty childish.

Thank yous will go a long way toward letting people know their efforts, humor or whatever does not go unappreciated.

For example, I previously didn't reply to this thread but was able to quickly and easily thank MA for the add-on. I felt, and still do, that it was a nice enhancement for the forum.

Additionally, I believe it will encourage participation of members who don't usually respond to threads, only read them. Clicking thank yous one day, begin posting soon thereafter.:cool
