Anyone know what the changes are in the new version of bootvis?

Here's the stuff from the MSKB:

"A performance trace visualization tool for use with Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) systems.

The current version of BootVis requires Windows XP SP1 or later, and addresses the following known issues:

Resolves a compatibility issue when running on Intel Pentium 4 processors with Hyper-Threading Technology enabled.

Note: In order to correct a problem with Bootvis tracing on systems with Hyper-Threading Technology, a kernel hot fix is required. Refer to Knowledge Base article Q821581 for more details and to obtain the fix.

Resolves a compatibility issue when using third-party IDE drivers.

Note: This tool is intended for hardware developers and manufacturers of PCs and PC peripherals only."
    ......................
Of course, since nearly every even slightly geeky individual in the universe HAS and HAS TRIED the earlier version, that last Note is of no significance whatsoever.

The advantages of the new version for SP1 machines are pretty narrowly defined. I've heard (but haven't yet installed it, so I'm not sure) that there's a set of instructions with this one, so that you don't HAVE to run down a third party to learn that ...

you're supposed to do three repetitions of the initial drivers and programs analysis (that's four reboots) before you ask the sware to optimize, cuz short of three or four boots, it doesn't have enough information on what it can re-order and re-sync to do a half decent job.

Think about it: the utility is charged with the task of finding a better sequence of operations for your boot process, so that there are no delays and the thrashing around of your HD is minimized. If you don't give it the chance to (1) run your bootup and record it, and (2) try some new sequences and (3) see how they affect the timing and (4) make adjustments on the basis of the tests, ...

well, the fact that I see reports on many help sites from people who have run Bootvis and gotten no help or a slower boot from it doesn't surprise me. Those who have run it for one reboot and then asked it to improve things AND have actually seen a benefit are lucky enough so that they ought to play the lotteries.
