So my luck has continued to take a decidedly southern dircetion. After being denied workmans comp and now denied sick benefits due to lack of insurable hours...... I'm job hunting.

I'm still employed but am not allowed back to that job until the end of next month and since I've been off work now for 5 months with no income and no help from any form of government or insurance.... I can't afford another month off, hell I'll be lucky if I still have a home at the end of this month.
I've also been advised by my doctor that I need to find lighter duty work before I physically fall apart, 2 hernias and some back, wrist, anckle and knee issues at the age of 32 is a sign I've past my sell by date :-D

So anyway, I'm job hunting, for now I guess I'll take whatever is going, applied for a few things like shop work, nursing home maintenance manager, Lube Technician (oil changes etc in vehicles lol).

But I don't want to be stuck in any of these for the rest of my natural.

Time to get qualified, problem is.......in what?
Now I'm thinking about things I enjoy doing, no point in learning something that doesn't interest me, the only thing I can think of thats realistically going to advance me is something in the form of Electronics, I'm thinking technician of some sort, I've always enjoyed taking stuff apart especially TV, Video's PC's etc.

But I'm open to suggestions, education is really not my thing (resist the comment Rikky :p ), never needed it before lol, so I'm not entirely sure whats what.

Most of you kind of know my personality and I would like to do something that doesn't have me simply sitting at a desk starring at a screen. Also want to do something that is a at least a little different each day, so Millright/factory work is out, been there, done that lol

Any help and/or advice any can give/offer would be apreciated :)
Feel free to ask me anything to that end :)

First off matey, I'm sorry bout all of that.

You know when I needed some supplement for my income, I actually turned to Home PC Repair. I don't know if they have Craigslist in the UK, but I put an ad out there and man, I started getting jobs left and right. People hate their computer tech support they get from the manufacturers and the local guys usually suck anyway. Might be something to consider.

Just in data recovery alone i have raked in some cash. Just an idea to put food on the table and still have some money for the footy. :major

Thinking the same thing. Never done it myself, but I know there's a lot of demand for it in Oz. Best wishes for the hunt.

    Not your fault mot :-D

Thats actually not a bad idea, I have some business cards but can't afford advertising, that old vicious circle just hangs around lol, but for some bizzarre reason "Free advertising" never crossed my mind or maybe it did and got shunted by all the other crap lol.

There's a few websites like that which cover my area (no pun intended :-D )

    Thanks man :)

BTW, I'm not in the UK, I'm in Canada, just an hour and a half from the US 100yards from Lake Erie :)
This is part of the reason for a lot of my financial issues, the lack of insurable hours is due to only having a work permit for a year and then finding a job with no qualifications, I never needed them before because I had a huge network of people in my home town in England, if I wanted a job, I could always get one in 24 hours, move here and whole different ball game.

@GCW.... lol I probably would have done the same thing, my bank number ends with 666, which is why I don't use that account anymore :-D

Yeah thanks for that lol, at this point to be honest I'll take a job almost anywhere except Tim Hortons or any fast food place.
Not that there's anything wrong with people working in them but I just could not handle that amount of incompetance, it would drive me nuts lol
I'd also like something that pays a little more than minimum wage, scratch that..... I NEED something that pays more than minimum wage.
It sucks because the begining of last year I was earning $25 per hour, unfortunately the lady I was renovating the house for ran out of money becuase she was fleased by the previous contractor, that was not only a good paying job but could have been a showcase for my work, the house still stands pretty much as I left it which is a shame because it's a beautiful 130 year old house, such is life.

@mot... already taken your advice, craigslist doesn't cover my area close enough but kijiji does and I'm sure I can find a couple more but kijiji is quite popular round this way so fingers crossed :)

Computer work is good, but is very sporadic for me.

Not sure what type of area you are in, but you might consider pizza delivery. Depending on the area, you can make some decent cash with tips. Back when I did that, after taxes my pay averaged to around $20 an hour. Not a career, but you might could work a couple of nights a week while you look for something better. Plus, we used to get some free pizza some shifts, so that would be a plus. ;)

Am thinking about going back and doing that myself a couple of night a week. I need more guns. :-D

Good luck, hope you find something soon.

    Hi Ned

Sorry to hear of your plight, jobs are hard to come by these days or at least good ones you can at least enjoy are, PC tech support is a good route into self employment, think from reading your posts you have enough experience and knowledge to get by, so maybe also as well as support think of building PCs too, can be a small but nice markup on profit.

Look in your area for any free training courses for unemployed that could be run by the gov, etc as they really normally want to get folk back into work so do at least in the UK run many training courses, so maybe the same in Canada, so worth checking, even if its for TV/Video repair work.

    Check out Microsoft Learning

I would always suggest try a career that you think you will enjoy and aim for that as taing something you dont like will only depress and drag you down.

Could look in your area and see if there are any PC repair companies, if there are maybe approach them for work.

If there are not then you have a premis for starting you own and hate or love to promote Microsoft stuff at times (they give me free stuff so what the hell, actually this week really did come through for my workplace in some expensive software for free, must thank the various managment server teams for helping, so they not a nasty company) but they do have a great lead in for new small businesses in Small Business Online and when you look at the packages you ge for free, its a good option for a new business even if in 12 months it doesnt take off or you have a change, the cost for doing this is small, in comparison to doing it yourself.

I'd go into tech support and use the above options, but truth be known I love the work I do now and it does allow me to use technology and computing to further medical research, which leads me to check your local hospital and see if they are taking on techs, hospitals always need IT support personel.
