    My old IDE CD-Rom died and my step son bought me a new one. upon opening the box many months later, i discovered the new cd-rom was sata, so I ordered a IDE to SATA converter online and plugged it into the IDE slot on the m/b, now its suppoed to be plug and play so I thought ,no problem, I installed the new cd-rom and connected the leads from the converter to cd-rom and turned the computer on, but its not detecting any new hardware, have tried booting with driver disk in but nothing is detected, power is getting to the cd-rom as a light comes on at bootup and power is getting to the converter as a red light comes on, hope someone can help

    IDE to SATA converters are problematic. When I worked at Fry's, I discovered (based on the return rates) some brands and models work far better than others (sadly, this was a few years ago and I can't remember which brands worked better).

    My advice would be to return the IDE/SATA converter for a refund and buy a native SATA internal drive. You can get one for around $20:

    Hope this helps. :)

    So ,what your saying is the sata cd-rom needs to go into the spare parts bin for now and for reliable compatable performance I should purchase a IDE cd-rom?

    Or avoid the hassle and use an external USB DVD/CD drive.

    Unfortunately, an external USB CD/DVD drive will not help the OP if they need to reinstall the OS if the BIOS doesn't support it.

    Try checking for Upper/Lower filters in the registry. these will stop your computer from seeing the CD/DVD drive. click <start>, <run>, then type in "regedit" press <enter>. now do the following:

    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    * SYSTEM
    * CurrentControlSet
    * Control
    * Class
    * {4D36E965-E325-11CE-
    BFC1-08002BE10318}

    Once you have completed the above steps, look to the right of your screen and if you see anything that say upper filter or lower filter then delete it. after performing this task, restart your computer and your CD/DVD drive should show up under the "my computer" section.

    Yeh, well, I've already purchased a new IDE dvdrom which should be delivered to my door any day now, I'll try installing that first, and if I still have the same problems I'll try what you suggested

    So you bought yourself a DVDROM, that means you will not be able to burn CD's or DVD's. The ROM part stands for Read Only Memory. Is that truly what you wanted?
