New Computer has burn smell? Why?

Hi. I just purchased a new barebones computer and after I installed the RAM and turned the computer on I have smelled a strong burning odor. The fan is running and nothing is hot to the touch. Is the burning smell normal for a barebones computer that has never been turned on? Is the burning smell only the plastic inside the computer warming up? I have been running the computer with the burning smell for about 6 hours and my computer appears to be running well. Can anyone who hand makes computers tell me if it is normal to smell a burn smell? Thanks. Shiloh.

 

mine used to have a funky smell when i first built it...smells nice in my opinion lol

i think its just normal for new electronics

 

Burning smells aren't normal, but if the computer keeps working...

I'd leave it on, cycle it on and off a few times a day, to get it past the warrenty period and make sure it is really working. After that you can baby it.

Burning smells are usually resistors frying themselves into oblivion. It can also be something like someone put something on the resistor causing it to smoke.

 

Take a good look at any power connections, wires, motherboard and cards. There was an article I read a while back (wish I could remember where) about cheap components being sold as big name brands and a few manufacturers didn't notice until customers started complaining about failures.

This was long enough ago that it probably isn't your problem but better safe than sorry.

Remembered just after clicking the post button, it was in a Maximum PC about two years back. Maybe you could do some googling and find it so you will know what to look for, I remember there were pics of what you might see if you had the bad components.
