New computer problems

My firend jsut biult a new computer and it is relly being wierd when you try to play games. When I installed half life 2 You can see all the background polygons and stuff. Also with the lost coast you cant see a gun and when you fire it shows a white square shooting out. Also fear messed up right away and you could see weird light and polygons all around. He has 1 gig of ram a AMD x2 4200 and a XFX 7900 GT. I know he ahs the updated drivers. What could be the problem?

maybe if its oced its a bad card even if he didnt it might be a bad card...(video card)
