New Computer Setup

Hi guys,

I'm planning on purchasing all the separate parts for my new computer, but this will be my first time putting together a computer from scratch. Besides the physical parts, what else do I need to set up? ex: OS, bios? other things?

ive posted this before but you will get the most stable operation by installing everything in this order:

OS>service pack>motherboards drivers>direct x>graphics drivers>everything else

just make sure you install the latest drivers as the drivers they give you that come with each part are usually outdated

Anyway, for a new computer you need the following:
* motherboard (make sure it's one that matches your CPU... mobos are either AMD or Pentium, and even within AMD and Pentiums, there are different sizes, so you need to make sure it's the right kind!)
* processor
* VERY IMPORTANT! Heatsink and Fan for the processor. In particular, with AMD, if you don't get one, the CPU will burn out and die. Also make sure the HSF are rated for the proc.
* memory
* PSU (I'd buy at least 400W, but that's just me!)
* hard drive, cd / dvd, floppy
* Case & case fans
* PCI devices you need, for example, modem, ethernet
* Graphics card (some motherboard do have builtin gfx, but these are pisspoor in performance)
* Sound card (again, some mobos do have a soundcard)
* Operating System and other software you need.

One thing you question in particular, the BIOS, you don't need to buy. These are flashed into the motherboard you buy, and while they can and should be updated, this is free to do from the mobo's manufacturer's website.
