Well, last night just about did it. I'm so sick of struggling with the ailments of my PC and it desperately needs so much input which I don't have time or understanding of. So basically we are going to purchase a new box of tricks only...all the peripherals are fine. Anyway, I did some surfing last night and would appreciate your input on this spec. It may not be the highest or fastest, but it is wayyy better than what I have (some of you may remember my spec I posted recently) and the Pavilion is meant to be good for digital photography and video which is a hobby I have.

    Just my .02...

A 2.0 Ghz P4 is better than a 3.0 Ghz Celeron. Otherwise... I like all of the other specs! :)

Celeron is Intels "budget chip". If you ever plan to do any video editing, gaming, etc, you might want to get something with a P4.

The motherboard for the Celeron won't accept a P4 (to my knowledge) so you won't be able to upgrade later.

Thats just me. See what others say.

The Celeron is a Steve said the budget version of a P4 and has half or less the on-die cache which does help in speeding up image processing or video editing.

dont get me wrong their is nothing much wrong with a Celeron CPU if your just going to be surfing the net etc BUT for photowork and image processing they are not the best option.

Quite alot of mobos these days so long as the socket type/pins are the same will accept both Celeron and P4.... on a Retail/OEM PC I wouldnt want to stick my neck out on that as those mobos are propritary and sometimes dont accept all upgrades.

Lev - you've done it, picked out a great machine. A better cpu and more storage for only "100 bucks" as the US folk say ;)

Yup :D And a "Buy now pay later" option with interest free credit until Dec 2005. I'm good to go *grins*

I'm going to use my old PC to learn how to upgrade a few things, then once I have it running more smoothly it will be a good starting point for our daughter who doesn't have a home PC but would like one.

Looks like everyones a winner Lev :)

That is a superb idea, play around with options, tweaks etc and then integrate onto new pc.

    Great work guy's. :)

A lot of members and visitors will read this thread and may help them choose a system that is right for what they actually do on a "day to day" basis and the difference in cost.

I think Lev was wise to post her issue and needs, many users will benefit from this post and info. :)

Just an aside - sounds like Lev's second choice was the way to go. I bought my wife an HP Pavillion last year and found it to be a good machine, very upgradable and accepting of various brands of RAM

If I WERE to go with a commercial system....it would most definately be an HP/Compaq!!!!!!

Hmm, it seems like a good enough machine. For a home machine, it'll be great I think :) I wouldn't trust it for commercial stuff though. Also, there is no description of what slots its got, whether you can upgrade the graphics card, how many PCI slots its got... if you're doing video editing, you might want to upgrade the video card one day to a dual head card, or you might want to add a video capture card...

Somthing you should think about before you put money down.

This is an HP/Compaq box and the newer ones are not upgradable. The way prices have dropped, I can buy cheaper than I can build now.

Actually Goldie, that's a good point I had already picked up on. I think I am going to go for this machine http://www.walmart.com/catalog/prod...pe=19&dept=3944&path=0:3944:3951:41937:386177 simply for that reason. I can see the spec...know exactly what I am getting, and the platform and software included. It's pretty much the same machine only I know it is complete for my purposes and good to plug in and go :)

First job will be to remove the WildTangent software *grins*

Thanks Bored..could you possibly post the full URL on that please. Everytime I click the link you gave it opens and closes in about 0.5 sec, so I can't get to see the item. :)

I was going to order today actually....pay day *grins*

I have posted the full link so you can cut and paste if the links don't work. You might try price matching also if you wanted Intel instead of AMD.

Hehe...if you view the upcoming special deals brochure for the following week it is going to be $299.

It does look a good deal...I guess I am just a HP & Intel kinda girl :)

If you take the ad in today or tomorrow they will honor it....

Compaq and HP are the same company and the HP and Compaq side by side look almost like twins..... same shell of box.
