    Hey Guys,
I need a new cpu for video rendering and programming. I have brought it down to a AMD Athlon II X4 630 and a AMD Phenom II X4 925. The only difference is one has L3 Cache and one dosn't. Could you tell me which one would be best for my situation

Which motherboard and graphics card do you have? These do make a difference.

Are you looking just for a CPU, to add to your current set-up? Then answer colliin's Q.

But if this is just a straight forward question, then the Phenom is the best, it's architecture is faster than the Athlons.

    I have a MSI 785GTM-E45 with 4GB of Corsair XMS2 1066MHZ RAM (Onboard Graphics)

Oh and this is a different system from my signature

I would go with the Phenom as well, but you will need a pretty high end graphics card to render video at any usable rate. Onboard is not suited to the task at all.

Which card would recommend for hybrid x-fire and my budget? (Maybe $100 Don't know what that is in pounds)

  8. collinsl

    collinsl MajorGeek

$100 is about £69 at the time of posting, which will get you around a 5570.

The problem here is that ATI do not support OpenGL, which is used a lot in rendering programs, and X-fire is not likely to bring much help, (as with SLI) it can sometimes limit performance. Therefore I recommend you go nVidia to get OpenGL support, so I recommend the nVidia GT240: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500146

Now if I got the 5570, what kind of games would that play on a 20 in. monitor

  10. Burrell

    Burrell MajorGeek

That's actually a decent card, without the extra eye candy, you should be able to play things like MW2, with standable frame rates!

  11. TheRealGEEK

    What about the 5670?

  12. Burrell

    Burrell MajorGeek

should be able to play just about anything on low settings.

If I get another GPU it'll probably be a 5570. Any other recommendations of what I should do with my new rig

I would go for the Phenom as well.

I agree with collinsl but I'm not sure if that effects you. I'm not sure if video rendering uses OpenGL.

I think ATI does support OpenGL just not as well as Nvidia cards.

    What program are you using?

  15. TheRealGEEK

    TheRealGEEK Private First Class

Most likely Windows Movie Maker and all of the free stuff with Windows 7

  16. pclover

    pclover MajorGeek

I don't think your GPU would effect you much with Windows Movie Maker since it's a home program not a high end one. Only CPU

A new gpu still woudn't be a bad idea if you decide to do higher end stuff with the pc.

Mostly what i'm going to do is program C++, Java and do Word, Powerpoint, Access, etc., and make movies with windows

Do you think i would need a new sound card. (Onboard is the Realtec ALC888)

  19. pclover

    pclover MajorGeek

I think the on-board sound is fine

If you do a lot of programing you may want to get a dual monitor setup. Then you would have to get a new GPU for this.

My MOBO has intergrated ATI Radeon HD 4200 with VGA DVI and HDMI. I really can't afford a seprate GPU. Now would a Coolmax V600 power this rig ok. I don't need this High, but it is a budget power supply and I don'twant it to fail under load, so I am thinking about a higher wattage.

The power is fine but the brand isn't. Please please please for the health of your computer and bank balance buy a good quality PSU because if a poor quality PSU goes it has a much higher chance of taking out everything connected to it than a reputable brand. Would this PSU be good enough

Wait forget my last post.:-o I ran a PSU calculator, and I only need a 350w PSU, but I want future expansion, so this Antec PSU would be adauquate. (Plus It's Modular)

  24. TheRealGEEK

    TheRealGEEK Private First Class

OK the Antec PSU has been discontinued:confused. Please recommend a PSU.

  25. pclover

I would get a new psu anyways. That PSU looks like a low quality unit.

That corsair one would be perfectly fine. In fact it is better than my one at the moment (wattage-wise).

That corsair one would be perfectly fine. In fact it is better than my one at the moment (wattage-wise). However, although I am sure it is perfectly fine, I would avoid the OCZ purely as the PSU reference list only lists three types of OCZ as being good: EliteXStream, EvoStream, ProXStream.

  29. pclover

    pclover MajorGeek

Just from personal experience I have a StealthXStream in my old pc and it does the job very well.

I don't see what the problem with OCZ is.

  30. collinsl

    collinsl MajorGeek

It's not OCZ that is the problem, it is the model, i.e. Fatal1ty. It's just that I personally do not recommend it, not that it is rubbish or poor quality or anything.

I can't spend that much on a PSU. I was kinda looking at this Cooler Master unit.

  32. pclover

I kinda would avoid Cooler Master.

I prefer seasonic myself, since corsair and a few others just use seasonic to make their PSUs. Cooler master uses a company called FSP group. In addition, I mainly check to see if it is 80plus certified. My current one is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151087 which I know is out of your price range.

Not just the product but Corsair has really good customer service and 5 year warranty. I think when buying pc parts that important to consider as well.

In addition, I use a couple websites to make my final decision. hardocp.com, hardwaresecrets.com.

So, yes, most antec or corsair PSUs should be okay.

Indeed the warranty is another nice thing to have. Mine is also 5 years. Not sure on the customer service, cause as of yet, I've never had to call them.:-D

What about this Thermaltake. Also is this a good quality SSD. Thanks for all of the feedback.;)

Thermaltake is a good reputable brand

You will love SSD's but I suggest an Intel or Corsair for SSD's Herd to many issues with other brands. Also make sure it has TRIM support.

I have a intel X25-V 40GB ssd and really like it.

I have heard that OCZ SSDs are fast. This one will read at 200Mbps, and write at 160Mbps. This is the fastest drive I have found with good reliability, smaller size, and low power consumption.

I also have a Thermaltake 850w in my Gaming rig. Solid power. Any other recommendations for my new rig?

Saddly I don't have the money for a new processor, so I'm using my old AMD Phenom X4 9750.
