new drive/windows

My problem is software and hardware. I have an old 1999 Compaq computer. It had windows 98 on it. One of my kids broke off the cd drive on it and I bought a brand new one from a friend and put it in myself. I was trying to get on the internet to download the software I needed for the hardware to work right and it didn't have a port on the back for Ethernet. So I rigged up a USB connection and decided that first I was going to uninstall Windows 98 and put Windows XP on it. Well, I am pretty stupid because I wasn't thinking that the cd drive wasn't operating right, and I uninstalled 98 and put the XP cd in the drive and it halfway installed it, but the cd won't reach enough speed to fully install the whole program. So now one of my computers has XP halfway installed and I can't use the computer. So, what do I do?

 

When you start to install xp where does it hang at? You should be able to install it all the way if you could install it halfway. Drivers won't help with that so there is another issue going on if it will only install halfway. Make sure that your disk is in good condition.

 

Well, it gets almost to the very last step, and then on the last step gets stuck on 13% and sets there forever. Occasionally you can hear the disk fire up and go really fast but then the percentage doesn't ever move. Also, when installing, there are 5 dots on the bottom that move from left to right to show installation and they never quit moving like it freezes or anything and the screen switches all the time telling you about XP and it still switches too, so I don't know what is going on with it but it frustrates me to the point that I want to throw it away and I was trying to fix it for my kids so they could play on an old one and stay off of the new one. So, is there a way to fix it?
