    Hi everyone,

I just bought a Gateway LT series netbook with Windows 7. I don't know much about computers, but I know that they come with a lot of junk.

I was wondering if people could just quickly help me figure out which added programs are ok to delete... I'm too nervous to delete on my own!

My biggest questions is the gateway welcome center. This is from gateway, not the windows 7 welcome center.

When I open it I am prompted by a banner to make igoogle my home page, and then it has links to eBay, netflicks, iGoogle, gateway games, try, buy,orActivate Microsoft office (60 day trial), and Microsoft works...I also have a desktop shortcut to each of these things, which started when I first turned it on.

Can I remove this without causing harm? It also shows up in my open programs tab at the bottom, and I can't have this starting up every time.

My other concerns are (keeping in mind I haven't bought and installed office yet):

Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 (its just the trial, right?)
Microsoft Silverlight (went to the webpage, no idea what this is)
Microsoft Office Power point viewer (doesn't matter considering I'm going to buy office, right?)
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition [EDU] (again, went to website, have no idea what this is!)
eBay worldwide (don't use ebay, figure I can go to website if I need to)

and finally, what exactly is Windows Live? I'm assuming I need it all, but I don't know what is it in the least!

Thank you so much indvance for all your help!! I know uninstalling programs that are important can screw everything up.

    Thanks!!! :)

    Hi

The Gateway Welcome Center is one of those things you need to decide if you like it or not, if not remove it.

You can change your Homepages in IE by clicking IE and then Tools > Internet Options and the General tab and in the Homepage box delete the ones you dont want and add the ones you do.

Office Trial, well if you have an alternate Office version and actually need Office type applciations like Word Processing and Databases etc then you are better off with the fuill versions of Microsoft Office or a free alternative is Sun Open Office as it will do all that MS Office does,

Silverlight, keep it as its the Microsoft version of Flash and some webpages wont work right without it.

    Powerpint Viewer I would keep.

SQL Server Compate version is for Microsoft Access so if you are not using Access then remove it.

eBay World ~ remove it if you dont want to use it.

Windows Live is this HERE its a multitude of apps from Email to Blogging and many are very good, I use Writer, Messenger, Gallery and Mail, the email one in Mail can allow you to confugure multiple email addresses in one application as well as RSS and Newsgroups.

    Hi

You are very welcome, this is also a good app to use PC De-Crapifier (I couldnt last night remember its name) as its good to weed out many of the non-essential apps that makers add to new PCs, also you may find alot of trial games on the PC, most are useless and really need uninstalling

also grab yourself CCleaner as its good for PC maintainence, especially if you have been uninstalling non needed applications.

I used Revo Uninstaller to remove/delete, clean the registry of all the things loaded on a new eMachines computer I bought last October. eMachines, Gateway and Acer are the same company so I suspect I had much of the same junk you are seeing. (I removed Adobe Reader and Air, after I was sure I could get Foxit to open pdf files, eBay links, Norton Internet Security trial, Google Toolbar for IE, Google Desktop and all the shortcuts to trial games).
