I just recently got an older Dell from a friend of mine since my pc of 8 years took a dump. This computer is a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz, 1.5MB ram, and has a 26GB hard drive. I purchased a 320GB harddrive for about $30 from MDTGlobal.com. It is a 7200rpm, ATA 100, 8MB buffer. It is an old school IDE hard drive. Anyways, I am having problems installing it. I am not sure how the jumpers should be set and what not. The hard drive that is currently in the computer is connected via an IDE Cable to the motherboard with nothing else connected to the cable.

Those are the two pictures I have of the new hard drive that i bought. Basically, what should the jumper configuration be?

just how that new hard drive is with the jumper the way it is, when i simply replace that into the computer and power it on, the windows XP home logo comes up like its loading, then a blue screen comes on that says:

A problem has been detectd and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screem, restarted your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: etc...

How come this screen is coming up?

Try without the jumper as shown at the top in your first pic.

I did, and the same blue screen of death comes up. It says the code is:

    STOP: 0x0000007E

What Operating System is installed on the machine and what Service Pack does it show?
Some older OSs did not like over a certain level of HD size.

Are you connecting just the new HD with the old one disconnected? If that is the case then most likely the HD you purchased is used and has an installation of XP on it. That installation is trying to boot in this machine but the Hardware is too different from the machine it was originally installed in. You could use your XP installation disc to install a fresh copy of XP. Or you could clone the original HD to the new one if that installation of XP works.

If you are trying to boot with both drives connected than it may still be a jumper problem. You would want to connect the new/second HD as slave.

I was completely taking out the new HD and replacing it with the new one. The old HD actually had Windows XP Pro on it, while I do think the new one I got did have windows XP Home on it. I was able to get into the bios and it installing a fresh new copy of windows xp home on the new one. So hopefully that works when it is done. I do not have the old HD plugged in at all.

It sounds like you have figured it out. You should be good to go. Good Luck! :)

Well, windows xp home installed fine on the computer. Just need to go find all the drivers now for the machine because I didn't get a cd or anything with it.

Dell are fairly easy to find drivers. Just write down the service tag number 6-8 digits from the sticker on the case and go to Dell.com>Support and enter the tag number. Should come up with a fairly good customized list.
