I just assembled a computer for the first time and it starts up and goes to a "Verifying DMI pool data" screen. While it says "Verifying DMI pool data..." it comes up with an error message that says "Missing operating system".

The hard drive has never had anything on it, there is no operating system installed on it. That is what I am trying to do. I am trying to install Ubuntu Linux version 6 on it. I insert the disk in to the CD-ROM drive and it does not start the installation program for Linux. Any ideas on what I am missing or doing wrong? I'd really appreciate the help.

the problem is in your BIOS settings, you need to set up your first boot option, and to make first boot from cd.

And you should insert the disk before you get that message. The best way to do this is to reboot with the disk already in the drive.

I have already done those things. However, I checked both again and in the BIOS my first boot device is listed as my CD-ROM and I tried booting again with the disk in the drive and I got the same error message. I also thought it could be a problem with the disk so I also tried a different disk and got the same message. Thanks for the quick response, any more ideas?

Did you run the disk utility software that came with the drive? Probably needs to be setup and formatted for your OS.

My hard drive did not come with any discs. I created a MS-DOS boot disk and booted to DOS from the C drive. I thought if I formatted and partitioned the hard drive it would help but then I received a DISK BOOT FAILURE error message.

I was searching the web and found that when installing Ubuntu Linux 6, the system should boot to the Ubuntu LiveCD and then you can install and do partitioning work from the actual LiveCD. I'm not sure if that helps but I appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

Did you finalize the CD? Ms-DOS boot disk won't work since DOS is not installed. You do not have any OS on the system, so you can't boot it. The only way is that Ubuntu CD, which is probably faulty or not finalized. If you burned it yourself, check the image md5 hash with the one on the site and see if it matches. Burn the CD again and if you use nero, tick 'Verify Written Data'.

Ok here's an easy suggestion. One hard drive I presume, make sure the jumper is set to master..

Thanks everyone for your help. I had my IDE cable plugged into the wrong connector on the motherboard. Switched it and it booted to the Ubuntu LiveCD.
