I have a 3tb hard drive coming to me and i would like to know if I can split the drive to boot the OS (Windows 7 64bit) from a 1tb of the 3tb drive and be able to set the drive up as a second drive with the space leftover? Please tell me this is possible.

I want to split the one 3tb drive into showing up as two seperate drives. I want to be able to boot from one of the split sides of the drive. I am on an older motherboard. An asus p5qe board. I want to be able to split the drive from one 3tb drive into two 1.5 drives and boot from one of the 1.5 drives. Is this possible?

Eldon, the person posted he is using an older motherboard. Will it recognize a 3TB hard drive? If not, it has to be partitioned before the computer "sees" it.

    Thanks plodr.

toki5, does your PC recognize the HDD? If not, you'll have to partition it using another PC.

The BIOS/Marvell controller on that board will not see an 3TB HDD without modification. However were it partitioned, more than 1TB may be too large for the board to physically address.

There are people who mod OEM versions of their BIOS to suit their needs, and the P5Q was/is a performance board with a strong following...

ok, I have the drive now. I feel sorry for getting this one atm. With MBR, it can only read 2tb. With GPT, it can read the whole drive. I need to use this drive as a boot drive. I tried setting it up to MBR, but there is a whole TB of space unallocated and I can't use it. It won't let me format it. I want to be able to use the entire thing if it is possible. This is why I was asking about splitting it somehow, so that I could use one side as a boot and the other for the free space.

Partition the hard disc using another PC - 2TB + 1TB. Windows will see the 2 partitions as 2 hard discs.
See the link in post #4.
