One of the biggest annoyances you encounter when testing Firefox's non-stable builds has always been add-on compatibility. When a version bump arrived, you could be fairly certain that some of your add-ons would stop working. That was certainly true when the Nightly build made the jump to version 6 on my laptop -- I've only got a handful installed, but none worked in the days immediately following the update.

Mozilla obviously understands how frustrating that can be, and they're working to change the situation. According to the Mozilla Blog, add-ons which are hosted on Mozilla servers will now be tested against Firefox Beta and Aurora automatically. Unless problems are detected, add-ons will be marked as compatible with new versions if they were compatible with the previous browser version. Users of Firefox nightly builds will still need to install the add-on compatibility reporter.

The kinks are still being ironed out, but Mozilla plans to have the new system in place in time for the arrival of the Firefox 5 beta.
