I don't change jobs often, but I had another research institute approach me a little over two months ago. I went through the interview process...

A week or two went by and my call back said that the federal background check was taking some time (this is somewhat standard procedure for this field). I waited. Two weeks later I finally got an email stating that they were contacting my references. Over the next week or so I got calls from most of my references saying that that they had been contacted. I heard nothing for a couple of weeks -- I even emailed the supervisor that was handling my application and didn't get a response for a couple of weeks.

I finally got a call on thursday with an offer - a pretty nice offer -- and we finally began negotiations about the job. Throughout the weekend, I traded emails and voicemails with the HR manager and just came to an agreement a few minutes ago.

Sorry if this sounds like bragging, but it is... my wife is on call and I can't get my twin brother on the phone, so someone had to hear about it.

It is the first time that I have entertained leaving a position for any reason other than moving -- and it is for the best reason I can think of... another corporation sought me out with an offer to steal me away and it came at a time when I wasn't happy at all with my current position -- though they had no way of knowing that.

Sorry for bragging -- I don't post here too often, but this is one of the few threads I thought was worth posting.

    :)

Congrats on the new job :)

Hey brag away, its always nice to be in a position to be aproached rather than the one doing the aproaching ;)

I wish you well, btw what sort of research is it you do?

    Congrats Publius.

I didn't read it as bragging, I read it as you being excited about a new opportunity in your life.

    Thanks for the well-wishes Halo.

My education is in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, though most of my efforts since graduation have been in Biochem (only been out 7 years) . Specifically, it has been mostly human protein purification and characterization, but the last year has been work with trans-dermal vaccine research.

Getting back to the human biochemistry with this new job. The group focuses its energy on drug discovery -- which is what got me interested in the field in the first place. Science is wonderful, especially if you have the good fortune to work in a field that matters to you.

    Thanks for the support.

Congrats Publius. I assume since they were romancing YOU, they offered a nice package to get you.

It's great to be in a field you both enjoy and can take pride in. :)

Thanks for the well wishes all.

There's plenty of room in the research field, and plenty of time to get there. If you have a passion for it, you have a leg up on many of my colleagues. :)
Too many people are here because this is "where they ended up".

Too few are given the opportunity to pursue their passion for discovery. I hope this is a step in the right direction.

    Thanks again. ;)

Unfortunately, I am almost 50 (49) and have been out of school many years. Although I have kept up with the literature sporadically, I feel like it is too late for me to change directions in life. Then again, who knows ?
