    Hey World,

After two and a bit years with my current employer I am to be made redundant :cry finish the week before Christmas to top it off... and no big pay out..just two weeks salary...

Can anyone advise of possible job or career paths from my skill set.

Have done a small business course but never ran a business, do have an apreciation for all the factors involved though.

Have worked for three+ years in computer sales, new and second hand and also within the same establishment helping with computer recycling.

Went on to do a Authorised Microsoft training in the MS office suite (intermediate level).

From there went and did 6 months training with a local tertiary and achieved 100% attendance and passed a level five computer desktop and hardware support course, building p.c's installing O/s's and some basic trouble shooting.

    From here spent four months looking for I.T work and have been with my current employer since then this was a varied role involving;
New builds for the training wing and also learning several proprietry software app's for the typing wing and having to learn sometimes on the fly how to trouble shoot these. Take the daily internet usage readings for monthly reports etc..This role also involved a bit of travel to train several members from government departments in the use of annotation software and setup of the laptop recording kits. Also involved first point of contact in troubleshooting the training wings students P.C's and also other I.T tasks on an needs be basis. Also training members of the public in the use of MS office products - to office 2003 - yeah I know they never updated to the office 2007 package to train in...pity.

So taken all this into account, is there a perfect job out there for me:confused

Interested in what employment options are available, and what line of I.T work I might enjoy which I may not have considered.;)

Any polite and concise thoughts or opinions would be appreciated
Thanks very much in advance to all that took the time. :wave

Have you considered trying at your Cities IT department? Or any Government office for that fact. Some places may start you out as part time but it's a foot in the door and the benefits are good too. Unless your into politics just do your job and get your pay and you'll be fine.LOL:p JK I worked for the city close to where I live but not for the IT but was told if you have hands on and/or took classes in the field of computers you had a foot in the door. Unfortunate for me the only class that I received a certificate for was computer electronics and that was the same year Pan Am went down and no jobs for those of us who where newbies in the field. Anyway it won't hurt to try. All they can do is tell you not at this time. I Wish you luck.

    Thanks guys,

    King Steve,
I concur the employment market is tuff here, with no I.T jobs listed in one of the biggest news papers days for employment, some 11 pages not one I.T job listed... maybe they all go through agencies or HR recruiters.

    bigtrucks,
Yes interesting even libraries and hospitals I suppose.

Where is the I.T market at now days, what skills are most in demand...any ideas? If I am to upskill train, I want to make sure there is a job at the end of the training to pay back the student loan...:cry

    Thanks for the responses todate...:wave

From what ive seen in the bigger job postings, its either specialists with 5-10 of experience, or generalists with 5 years of experience in server administration and customer support with a BS degree.

Im sure theres something out there for you. Best thing to do these days is just get your foot in any doors you can open. Thats what ive been doing. Just recently, i went to a business and gave them my resume and did a little tour with the managers. If you ask, chances are they will talk to you at least and put your resume on file. even if theyre not currently hiring, it can never hurt.
