New job, wish me luck!

A little difficult to relax enough to get to bed, even though I should have about 2 hours ago...

Starting a new job tomorrow! A teaching job at a school nearer to where I live. I used to go to that school almost 20 years ago, so some of my collegues will be my old teachers! In fact, I got the job from one of my old teachers who is taking a year off and wanted me to replace him...

Funny thing though... Work starts with a sort of "Kick-off" tomorrow, a conference on a boat driving around the archipelago in Stockholm while we "bond" in a nice and cosy environment. I used to work as the engineer on that boat 2 years ago! I know the captain really well, I'll feel as if I'm at 2 jobs at the same time!

Guess I really should get some sleep! Keep your fingers crossed for me, please!

 

Sounds like Old Home week, both with the boat crew and the faculty, to some extent. Enjoy the "bonding" time, and I hope the job works out well for you.

It was an odd sort of day! Such familiar grounds, even though I haven't worked there in over 2 years now. Old work mates, the current engineer used to be my inturn that I trained for the job! And on top of that, about 50 strangers that I shook hands with and forgot their names within 2 minutes...

I didn't take any photos, but I dug out some oldies for you! Here is the wreck in question. Don't let the photo fool you, it is a wreck!

And 2 photos from the engine room. First one is of me shutting down the aux after a 17 hour shift, and the second one is when I shift the flywheel to the correct position on the main engine, so that I can start it the following day. The main engine refused to fit in a photo, it is so huge, an enormous old Alfa B&M from 1957, 5 cyl 2 stroke, low rpm diesel engine of 300 hp. Those 300 hp manages to move this huge boat, 36 metres, at about 10 knots, which is quite impressive! The cylinder diameter is about half a metre, and there is a separate head on each of the cylinders. The engine is about 3 metres high, and 5 metres long, and you can see the size of the flywheel... The lady has a max of 190 rpm, lowest is 80, and then you hear each ignition! Lovely!

Sounds as if I miss it? Yeah, I did have loads of fun there, and I loved the old lady. Not payed enough to make a living on it though. And with this it is actually goodbye to the maritime world. at least for a while, as I won't even teach maritime subjects anymore. I will give a small course to 2 classes in technology and how the combustion engine works. Other than that, mainly English, guess I've got to brush up on my speling grammar and a little!

Something tells me you will probably go back to the ships and maritime stuff, at least for a while, one day. It gets in your system, so to speak, ya know.
