It's time to get a new laptop before the inevitable crash and burn happens...and all the signs are there. So, shopping around for what I would call a mid-priced laptop ($400-$500ish ?) I now find there's something call a Chromebook. Anyone have experience with this OS? My knee-jerk reaction is to stay away from it, nonetheless, I'm not looking forward to Windows 10 either. I keep saying Mac but their prices just kill me. I currently have an HP and I guess it's served me well, however, HP seems to put so much HP crap in their puters, it drives me insane (a very short trip).

For reference, here's what I have now, a HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC:

My wife and I have this hooked up to the big screen and watch a lot of commercial free stuff on the Internet, plus the other usual home computer things. We don't have a business nor create videos or anything like that.

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is based on Google's Chrome browser. Never tried one and try not too use Google browser due their intrusive snooping.

As regards laptop replacement, I too am looking to upgrade an old laptop. I am comfortable in buying a used one as I have dismantled many many laptops.

After much searching, I have settled on buying a Dell M4600. In excellent cosmetic condition they can be had for about the price you wanna pay. You can get one with Win7 installed if like me Win10 is not an option.

If you don't feel comfortable with buying used then best bet is to read mag reviews

Yeah, thank you but I'd rather stay away from a used one and I have read the reviews, which is one of the reasons I posted here.

A wise decision because if the video chip goes, you just paid for an expensive doorstop!

Not always the case. Some can be replaced as they are on daughter boards.

But an extremely valid point nevertheless and for which the only repair solution is a lengthy, boring, tedious and sometimes never ending process of replacing the mobo!!!!

I’ll leave that kind of work to the professionals; either the CRT (computer repair tech) or the WDST (waste disposal and sanitation tech).

FYI, the more I think about it the more I want nothing to do with a Chrome OS. I really don't trust MS, I sure as hell don't trust Google.
