From desktop can
ping laptop
vnc connects to desktop - no problem

From Laptop
cannot ping anything BUT the router
vnc will not connect to desktop
can access shared folder on desktop (makes me thing networking is working

Prior to installing VNC the sole purpose of the home network was to share my broadband connection with my son and my Linux box.

I am running the same version of RealVNC on both pc's.

With the laptop next to the desktop, I have compared the vnc config's
and they are the same.

Am using DHCP, but it is an easy task to verify that the ip address have not changed.

To summarize:
vnc and ping from desktop to laptop works.
vnc and ping from laptop to desktop does not work

This has got to be something simple, But I cannot see it!!!

Check your software firewalls. They can really cause problems if not "told" about the network.

You don't have one PC in a DMZ, do you?

Router IP should also be set as "gateway" on each PC. Make sure you only have one DHCP server running. Your boxes all need to be on the same IP segment xxx.xxx.xxx and the same as the router net address.

 

The firewall (zone alarm) was turned off to test the connection.

All of the components are on the same IP segment.
I hard coded the IP address and dns address. The router is the dns.

Realvnc works from desktop to laptop but NOT laptop to desktop.
all other network services work from laptop to desktop..

even though I can view this forum from desktop [c, I cannot post to if from desktop (hit enter, never get a response and post never gets applied)

What is a DMZ????
