New Laptop

I'm getting a new laptop soon, and would like to use it to download movies and stuff (i know i know, probably not the best idea, but it's either that or paying for them, which costs money i don't have) and i was wondering how to set it in hybrination mode so that it won't burn down my parent's house. i also would love it if i wouldn't screw this one up so any advice on keeping the infected files out of my computer would be greatly appreciated!!! and also just some general tips on computer safety and repairs would unwanted!!!! thanks guys and gals
