New laptop

    I have recently advanced to a HP pro laptop running windows7 pro.
    What additional programmes do you suggest I download to ensure it I am better protected.
    Also, windows advises me that they scan my laptop on a Sunday at 1400hrs. How can this occur when my laptop is not on and is connected by wireless?
    Any advise appreciated.

    Greetings, Butain, and welcome to MajorGeeks...

    A good antivirus program is essential - preferably one that includes antispyware capabilities.

    I'm sure others will offer their software promptings, but I suggest that the very first thing that you do with your new machine is to create a set of system recovery disks before you start adding new programs - that is, if your computer did not ship with those disks. Instructions for this task should be included in your HP documentation.

    My computers are set to scan at 2am Sunday (200 hours) when my computers are off. Eventually the MS Security Essentials' icon will turn orange if the computer has not been scanned in 2 or 3 weeks and I then scan it.
    I can recommend Malwarebytes for additional protection. I have either the free or paid version running on all Windows computers in the house (currently seven of them).

    You will have to turn it on for the software to scan, and it will need to be connected to the internet to do updates.

    I agree with plodr, the paid Malwarebytes is an excellent choice.
