I put to gether a new machine and while installing windows XP pro it reboots.
It happens at the same spot each time. Just after the F2 prompt.
    Pentium D processor 820
    Asus p5sd2-x motherboard
    Corsair VS1gbkit667d2 ram
    Geforce 7300 gs video card
    STAT hard drive
    Liteon cd/dvd rw drive.

Anyone have any ideas what to do?

    Check all your connections,

Forgot what the F2 prompt is, Is that when it says Press F2 for raid?

f2 prompt is after the f6 to load raid 3rd party software.
f2 is to initiate automatic system recovery.
I actually got it to go 2 steps further a few minutes ago. I almost thought it might start loading.
What connections exactly? I have tried various configurations of memory connectors. Changed SATA connector position. Reseated the video card.
Some IT folks here insist it is a RAM problem.

Yea Ram was what i was thinking.

by connections, I meant what you have done, just make sure everything is plugged in correctly.

Have you tried loading with just a single stick of ram, anything over 256mb?

yeah...each stick is 512. I've tried every combination of single stick, dimm connector. both sticks swapped connectors/separate channels etc...
Corsairs website says the mem and mobo combo are compatible.

I'm sure someone has suggested this already. Unplug everything apart from what is needed to go through the first process in set up, and then add to it until it crashes.

Just load with power, ram, cd drive and graphics card, (if not on board.) Dont bother with sound cards, hard drives etc.

Have you got another working PC that you can use some bits from. (maybe power supply is on the way out)

    power supplly....hadn't thought of that.
I just purchased some new RAM. I'm going to see if that does the trick.

    No joy.
The power supply voltages check out. I may try swapping mobo.
I hate just black box swapping things.

When I was in school I remember microsoft recommending disabling the bios virus protection when installing an OS, just a thought and quick to try, just dont install with internet online. I've personally never had to, it's allways worked with it on but thought I'd mention it.

He isnt even getting to the point of installing the OS, bio level Av would unlikely do that.

When it says to press F6, try hitting F5 a few times until it says it cannot detect your type of computer, yada, yada.

Then load whatever standard PC option it has.

If that works, chances are your motherboard has some real issues.
