New Mail Notification

I want to change the sound for new mail notification to my old familiar .wav on my old Win 98 for my new XP system. I transferred the old notify.wav to my new computer and proceeded to use Win Explorer to move this to C:Windows/Media folder. I get a warning that the files are hidden, and not to make changes as I may damage my computer (something similar). The option is there to proceed, but I did so with caution. The question is would I be ok to proceed and put the old .wav file into the Media folder in spite of this warning?

 

Yes, it should be OK (although I've never tried using 98 files for XP).

If there is an existing file there with the same name, simply rename it to notify.old, and if you have a problem, you can go back and change it.

 

Just making sure I do this right. Should it be notify.old, or notifyold.wav?

 

Just change the extension to old is the easiest.

 

I was confused by that because I thought the extension had to be .wav for the computer to know what to do with it?

 

I said the existing file, not the file you want to use.

If there is already a notify.wav in your XP folder, change it to notify.old.

Then take the notify.wav from your other machine and copy and paste it into your XP one.

If you don't rename the existing file in XP, you will overwrite and lose it when you copy and paste.

 

i changed my new mail sound on my aim buddy list and when i start up my aim messenger it tells me if i have mail on my outlook express with my new mail sound i changed my sound to the road rovers i think it was the commercial break sound its good and loud so i can hear it even if im asleep lol or in another room
