it's not recommended, and you will probably get a blue screen in windows. what OS's do you have? you might be able to do a repair installation for windows xp, but i don't know if it will work.

thanks for the info, i have xp on 2 and xp64 bit on the other. i was hoping to be able to do it but i guess i cant. maybe i can mirror the drives with norton ghost and format the drives then reinstall?

95% of the time Windows will NOT boot when the motherboard is swapped out. However, you can perform a repair install of Windows once the new motherboard is installed, and 95% of the time this works fine.

    Yup. No problem there.

Just curious.... why do you have 2 hard drives with XP, and one with XP64? Seems a bit redundant....

one drive with xp is strictly for game modding, the other xp is for games. the 64 bit i just decided to try on different games to see if they would run any better utilizing the 4 gigs of ram, plus the o/s was a freebie from a friend as was the hard drive so i figured i couldn't go wrong there.

As painful as it sounds - renstall the OS's.

IMHO you will not get the chipset and embedded device's drivers right unless you do. You may get things to work, even work pretty well, but your XP install will carry over the trash from your previous installation.

Ghost makes an image, you cannot install programs via Ghost. Ghost will overwrite your fresh OS install if you restore from it.
But.. many programs do not need to be installed, copy them over and see if they run.

yes i know ,what i was going to do is make a image of the drives then select certain programs from the image and install on new drive.

It could work like you wanted if the replacement motherboard was an EXACT replacement for the one you have.
Too many differences with driversand components otherwise.
