yepp..I'm wondering, that if I bought a newer mobo for my desktop so I could get a dual core processor (this is the older sempron 754 socket)

how would I go about switching everything over to the new mobo?...with the exception of RAM...I would be buying DDR2 RAM for that mobo.

but how would I switch over the hard drive?...because the bios on the drive would be different than the mobo's bios.

yes...I'm aware that my question wasn't really clear...sorry bout that.

Changing the mobo is basically changing the computer you need to do a fresh install of windows,it can work sometimes but it isnt worth the hassle

Make a backup for all your files on a separate disk or a DVD.....

    Then re-install windows...

thanks clark..but slight problem..I don't have the Windows disc...this comp was given to me after the lady I got it from thought it was broken...so there were no cd's whatsoever...

guess I gotta go buy a new XP cd.

Switching mb shouldnt hurt Win xp ---
I switch my hd from a Fic board that supports --socket 462
to my Biostar --supports socket 754 --- all you need is to install new mb drivers once you boot Win xp on the dual core processor ....
    ps...Uninstall vid--audio--amd chip---first...

Sometimes it works, but honestly you should reinstall windows. That way your hardware is definitly setup correctly, and you don't have any legacy drivers floating around due to having changed your motherboard.

Probably. If the lady that gave the machine to you used her Windows distro CD to install Windows on another machine, the copy you have is illegal. But I wouldn't worry. It's more likely that she bought a replacement machine that had its own copy of Windows. Too bad you didn't get the Windows CD with the machine.
