I just installed a new motherboard and CPU combo. I am having a problem getting the computer up and running now. I can feel the hard drive kick on however the monitor is blank and the keyboard does not light up. Any suggestions?

The board is a PC Chips K7 M863G
    CPU AMD 2400+
Hard Drive Western Digital 80GB New WD 8400mb Old I have tried both

    Any beeps on boot?
Memory? Is it known to be good?
Are all the power connectors plugged in?
    Do the fans spin?

New memory no beeps and the fans kick on. I have one connector that I am not sure about the Power Led it needs 3 prongs the only place it should go on the board is a 2 prong position.

Firstly a motherboard doe not need hard drives, floppies etc to produce video output so concentrate on getting the board working.

In order to show life a motherboard needs a good psu, correctly connected and a power switch. Usually one or more LEDs will light at this stage. I am not familiar with yours has it on board graphics?

To be useful you must add functional compatible memory ( in pairs if necessary) and a working graphics card, also compatible. Further your bios must be set to output to AGP or PCI and on board or plug in card. With a working processor the board normally emits beeps if there is a fault with video or memory, but the processor is working.

Since you have no beeps your are either plugging into the wrong vga slot or your bios is set to the wrong video output- recheck all your wiring and also that you have the correct sort of memory.

It does have on board video. I checked all wiring and the memory is new Kingston I have also tried Crucial from my main tower. still nothing. What should my next steps be?

Looking at my data sheets your motherboard is good for a 2.4G AMD athlon64 at 266 bus speed or a 2.4 G AMD Sempron at 333 bus speed.

You have not told us which you have.

The Athlon requires DDR266 184 pin memory also called PC2100
The Sempron requires DDR333 184 pin memory also called PC2700

    Motherboard website is

If the motherboard is new and you have correctly hooked it up to a known working vga lead and monitor you should get a picture on screen. If not one of your components, including the board, is faulty.

If the board is not new and was set to use the AGP you will need to use an AGP or PCI graphics card, temporarily inserted to reset the defailt VGA in Bios.

    Bes tof luck

Sorry about that it shipped with amd 333 installed it has PCI x slot open so that would mean I need to get a PCI graphics card to reset this to use onboard graphics then?

by the way thanks for your help so far with this

Manufacturers of boards with onboard VGA normally ship with the onboard or auto enabled in the supposition that the user wants all their finest. It is up to the user to reset to PCI or AGP i.e. turn off the onboard graphics. This cannot always be done, you will need to check with the board's manual.

The point is that on board graphics steals some of the installed memory, an extra card has its own.

If you motherboard is new something must be faulty or broken in your installation process. there have been several reports of faulty new motherboards lately.

PS I didn't check the manual for speed jumpers, it's been so long since I needed them.

I know Studiot mentioned this, but the memory often stops things getting up and running, if you have checked compatability - just try removing completely, and reseating - I just fell over that problem on my old board, where it had been shiftied about, and the memory sticks had lost contact.
