New ( Need Advice on Programs )

I need some advice on what programs to run for virus scan , spyware , malware and all that stuff.

I am running Windows XP SP2 OEM . I have a new DSL internet connection with Bellsouth , using a Westell DSL 2 + Router model E90-610030 . I have no controll over the router as Bellsouth walked me thru setup for some reason or other.

On the Major Geeks home page there were alot of ( must have free downloads). I am running Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search & Destroy , Ad-Aware SE Personal , Ccleaner, Windows Defender, Windows XP firewall,
AVG Free Anti-Virus, Windows Malicious Software removal Tool Jan. 2007,
& McAfee Sight Advisor. I have downloaded internet explorer 7 but I use FireFox Version 2.0.0.1 mostly.

I downloaded a trial version of Spyware Doctor that I thought was free a week or so ago and It found something called com.com. I did not remove this as I did not know what it was. I uninstalled the spyware Doctor and I tried a couple of days later to download it again and it would not download. Has anyone heard of this com.com & is it harmful ?

Do you think I have to many programs or are there any that I need that would work better than the ones I am using now ? Thanks for feedback.

 

welcome to MG's. unless im missing something i dont see a firewall on your list ( windows firewall is not good enough to protect you ) apart from that your pretty much covered. here is a good link to check out http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20 never heard of com.com but could be something harmless like a cookie.

 

I am using the Windows firewall. I was told on another forum that it would be good enough being behind a router. Thanks for feedback , will check out your link.

I have downloaded PC Tools Plus firewall & disabled the Windows firewall. That should work with my other programs without
any conflicts . Correct ?
