New OS Display issues

Hi,
I just switched my os to linux from win xp home, actually just trying out this knoppix live cd thing before I install debian to the hardrive.Heres the problem, the display is as if it's set to a very low resolution about the same as if I were to boot win xp in safe mode.I'm not familiar with this os, but I did bring up the display settings under the control panel on knoppix and it's only listing 1 availible screen resolution.Am I able to just download new drivers from the manufacturer,or does this os not support my monitor?

PC specs:
dell dimension 2400
p4 proccessor
os:currently none installed just running knoppix off cd-rom
monitor;dell (stock dim. 2400)

not sure of what other type of hardware is on this pc,but it has no third party hardware everything is stock.
I would check,but again im not familiar w/ this os so trying to find it is hard.

Yes, this sounds like a driver problem to me. http://support.dell.com will have the drivers for your system.

Also I was wondering if someone here could tell me here how to boot debian 3.1.
I just installed it,and I'm not able to boot it up. I'm not familiar with this operating system and i spent just about all day trying to figure out how to boot it.I have it installed correctly,and Iv'e read countless tutorials to no avail.Is this os suppose to boot up just like windows when you turn on the power or is there like some command I have to enter?The furthest I got was to some wierd command prompt after it went through a boot test.
