    Hey Guys,

I got a new PC and need some recommendations for the following,

    My System:
    ASRock 775Dual-VSTA
    Intel Pentium DUO 2160 @ 1.8GHz
    2GB Memory
    Radeon PCIE 4x X1950 Pro
    160GB IDE Hard Drive
    DVDRW
    Windows XP Pro SlipStreamed SP3
    Critical Updates.

    I have installed:
    VIA Hyperion Chipset
    LanCard Drivers
    ATI Standalone WDM Drivers

What other Drivers/Programs would you recommend?

I don't like heavy applications, it like Norton AV, etc I like good, fast, clean & lite software.

What essential programs would you suggest? I mainly use this PC for Websurfing and Gaming, so I would like to be able to get the most out of it.

    Anti Virus Program?
    DVD/CD Burning Software?
    Torrent Application?
    MultiMedia program? ie: PowerDVD?

Any suggestions and download locations would be greatly appreciated.

This is my mainboard, I am unsure of what drivers I actually require, I don't know if the lastest hyperionPro drivers will work on my machine, exactly what audio I have, is it realtek? I installed the drivers the ASRock website supply, but they appear to be dated, I can't seem to find new drivers...

    Cheers,

    Davo

    Hi

Personally I woudld get your reboot issue sorted before installing any applications as the more you install the harder it can be to narrow the cause down, but my suggestions are:

    Antivirus ~ Avast
    Spywareblaster
    MalwareBytes as a complementary scanner
    Burning app ~ CDBurnerXP
Multimedia ~ Windows Media Player (built in) or VLC

    CCleaner for cleaning up PC

    Torrent application ~ HERE ~)

Just noticed your edit, if all your devices are working ok and you have no yellow ! marks in Device Manager dont update drivers just for the sake of it, many dont need updating, the only ones I actually update are the Graphic Card and the LAN/Network drivers, all the others will be fine, never go near the Audio as too many issues are caused when not using the original drivers the maker released.

If ASRock issue new drivers for that motherboard then its ok to update, but if devices are ok its better to follow the old addage of "if not broken dont fix"

Just also thought of a few others...

Office application, if you dont have Microsoft Office, then try Open Office its free and works just as well.

Browsers, I tend to use IE8 but also have Opera and Firefox installed, do use a developement build of Firefox so the link I left is the official final version of latest.

For email try either Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird

I have Utorrent installed but I have a port problem, I have Windows XP Firewall exception, and even tried turning it off, but I am using a Dynalink RTA100+ ADSL Modem, latest Firmware, the firewall in that appears to be turned off, but I still get a "!" for my connection, and trying many random ports and checking them, they come back as closed, do you have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? it is extremely infuriating! I cannot express how irritated it has got me!

I hate having equipment that I basically cannot use! :(

I also downloaded the latest VIA Hyperion Drivers and it seems to have fixed the lagging issue, before when I downloaded an application, say the ATI Catalyst drivers and double clicked it to run, it would pause for a few seconds, then come up with the Run/Cancel dialogue box. Now when I double click an application, it comes up straight away with no lag what so ever! :)

    Hi

Start a thread on the modem in hardware (think you have one already, if so continue in that) as best to seperate questions. Found it its here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=205294 their are posts that you may not have seen or tried the suggestions.

Anyone know where to download Microsoft Net FrameWork 2.0 or later, my ATI Catalyst drivers are asking me to download and install it, but everytime I click on a link that leads to microsoft.com/????? it cannot find the server, yet any other link, like majorgeeks.com works... :S

Anything that reverts to microsoft.com won't download, I dont know why, it just won't allow it, I even downloaded windows defender via another website, as it starts scanning I get an error code, something about it can't update the definitions! I don't know whats going on, I am currently running Avast Virus Cleaner, and have installed Avast Home Edition 4.8, Just waiting for the viral scanner to complete so I can restart my computer and do a full virus scan, if it is a trojan or worm though, avast won't detect it, I have also installed Spyware Blaster, but can't find out how to do a system scan in it, protection is enabled though.

Spywareblaster is just an app that blocks known bad sites and activeX from infecting your PC its preventative and does not, scan just adds these known bad sites to the exceptions list in IE and Firefox.

If you cannot connect to any Microsoft site, Defender wont update as it will connect to a Microsoft Server to do this, the info in your other thread on the Read Me guide in malware is what you need to run.

But to be honest if this is a new install of Windows XP then I would be tempted to clean install again and before you do so download soem security applications pop them on CD or USB that have been mentioned, once Windows and drivers are installed, install the security apps before you go online at all.

I would normally do a clean, fresh install, however I cannot be bothered doing it all over again, I really do think it is either my ISP or my modem, however windows update did originally work when I tried it originally on this current clean install, it even downloaded 16% of a critical update via automatic updating, but it stopped there, what I will do is leave it as is and try it again in 24 hours and see how I go, I don't know what to make of it at the moment.

    Regards,

    David Giles
