Hi im having boot problems with a new pc. It boots fine the first time you turn it on. after shutting down the pc, it will not boot, it has no display and doesnt make it past the bios (beep sound). turning on and off from the front power button doesnt make a difference. The only way to make it boot again is to turn the power off from the back power supply switch. after doing this it boots up fine. I have tried removing every thing but the basics, case, motherboard, processor and memory, still no boot past bios. have also tried another new set of case, motherboard, processor and memory. still same probem. so was wondering if maybe bios settings or bad combo of parts can cause this? parts being used are:
Case -Foxxconn supercase 194 with 400W TT p/supply
    Mother board - Gigabyte GA-8VM800PMD-775
    Processor -Pentium 4 630 3gh 800Mhz FSB 2mb cache 775 socket
    Memory -Ramos 512mb DDR2

any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks Chunkymonkey

anyone think it could be a ram problem? have you tried different ram, i have a gigbyte also and they are really picky to what kinda ram you use, i have to use PNY or its really unstable or does not even boot. also try testing the ram using memtest tell use what it comes up with. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=350

ok have read though the artical, but cant be windows xp related, because there is no harddrive attatched and still dont boot. so i think its probably hardware or bios related, because every thing is disconnected except motherboard(has on board video), memory and processor. reconnected harddrive and tested memory with memtest. i ran it for about an hour but it came up with no errors. im really lost with this problem. and any suggestion or ideas would be much appreciated. And also thankyou to the people that have posted already.

Test your PSU, Thermaltakes are know to be problematic

When it fails to boot are there fans/lights on & running?

When a PC fails to boot & no beep codes are present this can sometimes be a short on the MOBO, but your having to use the switch on the back of the PSU & can get booted once it's Most likely the PSU
    Thermalcrap:eek:

ok tried different brand of powersupply, still having the same problem. when it fails to boot yes the lights fans all come on. can hear the harddrive starting up too when its connected. as far as motherboard shorting. how do i check for that. and would it boot up at all if it was shorted?

Did you or when you installed the MOBO did you make sure the MOBO standoff were installed in the correct position?

One other guess, you might have a short in your power switch on your case
or even short on front pannel stuff like HDD leds, PW leds etc common problem on cases that have these things wired on doors that cover CD/dvd drive areas, opening & closing the door can break or damage wires causing short

Check for skinned wires, loose conductive objects like loose screws, burn marks on mobo.

You might try assembling your system outside of the case, on non conductive surface, like the mobo box, using only basic hardware: cpu/cpu fan/one stick memory/video card, if system has onboard video use it, then see if problem persists
You dont need CD/dvd or HDD for this, just try to post & access BIOS, shut down & repete

    Maybe you Thermalconked your MOBO:p
Viper, I can think of One PSU rated lower than yours "LOL" I just posted about one in another thread about a case:p

ok, stand offs ok in right place, so took out mother board on to motherboard box and setup with p/supply, motherboard, memory, cpu and case switch. still same problem. disconnected case switch and used screwdriver across power switch pins to simulate switch being pressed. still same problem. no burn marks or broken tracks found and no skinned wires. any more suggestions?

i originally thought it was a crook memory. so replaced it with another 1 and still had the same problem, so changed the cpu, same problem, so changed the case and motherboard, still same problem. have checked memory with memtest, tryed different p/supply and checked for shorts stripped cables and burned areas. all up have two cpu's, 2 motherboards, 2 sets of ddr2ram and cases, and no working computer, both do the same thing. unless it was a bad batch or they got static damaged some how. im not sure. thats why im here. one thing i did find is when the bios battery is taken out the memory speed drops back to 400 and it boots past the bios every time. cold and hot boot. I dont know if this helps any one. but i guess ill wait and see if i get a response.

i more thing will seting the memory speed to lower than the accual speed of the ram damage it? the memory is DDR2 at 533 but. so will seting to 400 be bad, cause the computer boots every time when set to 400

you say it beeps once and no display? is the display good?

no,it cold boots(turn off power from back of power supply or off at wall socket) beeps once and works fine. if computer has alreay been on and shutdown you turn on from front, then no beep no post no boot. and the monitor is fine because it works when cold booted.

was also thinking if the video card was damaged could that of damaged the motherboard. and is there any to test if videocard is bad with out puting into another mother board.in case it gets damaged to.

yup right here http://freestone-group.com/video-card-stability-test.htm download the video card stability test exe and tell us what you get read the FAQ to make sure you understand everything about the program. it also gives you a benchmark test if the interests you. i also though about something check bios to make sure that its seeing the speed of the cpu fan, also make sure the cpu fan is spinning the proper speed, i have seen some board do this because of that, actually award bios has a error on this " One low pitched tone for every 5 seconds, over and over. System boots fine, but will not reboot from a warm boot. The system will reboot from a cold boot though. Check the fan speed in the BIOS and change it to a higher speed."
