New PCI Adapter Problem

Hi everyone. I have a problem and hope someone can help. I just bought a Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter for my Compaq desktop. When I install it then power up my computer it will not boot up. I have to take it back out for my computer to work. I called their tech support and they said I have to update my IRQ so that my computer will read the PCI slot. I checked compaq's web site but I do not see an update or patch for my computer. I am using win 98se. My computer is a Compaq 4850. Thanks for the help.

 

I have the same PC and encountering the same problem. I reloaded 98SE and connected it to the net with a hard line and took all of the OS updates, and loaded all of the system drivers from CQ support. I can now get it to boot and load the card, but it still won't negotiate the wireless net. I have also tried a USB Linksys device.

Here's what I know:

1. The PCI card has a 500 Mhz requirement, which we are short by 50 Mhz. I find it hard to believe this is the issues.

2. The USB device requires Windows 2000 or higher, but I have read where people get these things to work with 98SE.

Still in search of a solution...

uhh i may be wrong.. but irq is a interupt request.. it can not be "updated* its how hardware talks to software... sounds like compaq is bsing you... check the compaq site again and see if there is any bios updates availible
