I have a new Westie that we rescued from a bad situation. His name is Mr. Waffles. He's a pretty cool bugger...

Awww! I love watching indoor kitties get to go outside. They're always so O_O about it. My cat, the few times he gets to go outside, tends to just hunker down wherever he's set down, and stays in one place just sniffing madly and looking all around. (Makes me feel better, if he ever got out, I expect I'd come home to find him sitting five feet from the door, listening to the birds.)

Jerry's about 13 and has been an indoor cat since we rescued him as a stray kitten. He has been outside very rarely but has finally gotten over the strangeness. He used to do like yours, plus lift his paws like he was stepping in something nasty, when walking in the grass.
He still high tails straight towards the back door when spooked or he's had enough. LOL

That's so true, about the stepping in something nasty -- my cat does the exact same thing.

Yeah, it's hard to turn an outdoor cat into an indoor cat, but it's so much better for them, and better yet if they start off as an indoor cat as a kitten, like yours. They live longer when they're indoor cats, and a lot of pet owners end up having declawed cats, and cats with no front claws have absolutely no defense mechanisms if anything scary should happen, like a dog or a predator of some sort. They can't climb trees to escape, and can't inflict pain on an attacker to scare them off. I used to volunteer at a cat shelter and it was so sad to see how many cats were brought in injured or sick because they either couldn't run away, or because they were stuck outside during a storm or when there were dogs or predators out there. :(

Yeah, Jerry has had his front claws (and some personal equipment) :eek removed and we have always been wary of letting him get out. I mainly take him out to rub and brush the shedding hair out of his coat and let him sniff around the bird feeder. :-D

He is a great watch dog, Darlene. He hears and barks at things, before our Boxer does.
AND he's very ferocious. All 3 pounds of him. LOL

Seriously, the first step to being safe is knowing when someone is on your property, as early as possible, so that you have time to take whatever actions you need to take.

May I suggest land mines? Or Punji stick traps? LOL

Oh, think I'll do this - what is it??

  13. musksnipe

It's what the Viet Cong used. They dug a hole, planted sharpened bamboo sticks covered in excrement, at the bottom, covered it with a mat and dirt, and then when you stepped on it, Ouch and infection. :cry
Probably not legal for you to do though. rolleyes
PS: substitute nails, pounded through a thin square of plywood. You could just place them around in spots that they would walk through and might not see. LOL

Not to insinuate anyone here is allowing this but for people to say things like, "the kids can do anything to the dog, pull on it jump on it and it takes it" is sad for the poor dog, if the parents don't allow the dog to hurt the kids why is it ok the other way around.

I have to agree. I use to have a Ferret.. he was mean. Didn't like ANYONE. I use to take him for walks and people would say.. aww nice cute ferret, can I pet him? I would say, yes you can, but he hates you. he will bite you, you will hurt and bleed.. They'd always pet him, and bleed..

But my ferret deserved to be walked.. He didn't ask to be touched.. Oh well..If someone wants to get hurt, who am I to tell them not to?

One of our cats, the older one has never taken to people especially kids. With some people after hearing she would possibly bite would make a point to go to her, she hisses and swipes the air is all , as far as I know, if she did bite they never admited it. rolleyes

I agree! I always hate it when I see kids treating pets badly, under the excuse "they don't know any better." Of course, sometimes (esp. with bigger dogs) the dog isn't affected by it, but with littler dogs and especially cats, they can get really antisocial from poor treatment from kids. And people wonder why their pets don't like kids.

(Not that all pets who don't like kids have had this treatment, some pets are just like that.)

One of my daughters adopting a dog, the agency didn't allow any children under the age 6 in the house it was going to. Good idea, I think, being the puppy was so small to begin with.

Here's my 'babies'. Tropical 3 feet tank. From left to right: Angel fish, loach and catfish. There are alot more but they like to hide, just under the catfish in the cave is a clownfish. It's better than TV.

Wow, that looks like a lovely tank! I miss having fish... they can be so wonderful to keep, calming/entertaining/rewarding. But my cat would completely decimate any fish I got, unfortunately. rolleyes

There is a very fine line between the child playing with the animal and the child abusing the animal, even if it is because they don't realize it. I found that I would explain to my son what it felt like to the dog, and then i would demonstrate on him, and he got the point really quick.

I think it's up to the animal, where the abuse line starts.. When I play with my mom's German Shepherd, who is very familiar with me, I can slap it in the face, pretty hard.. and I think you could only call it abuse if the animal acts as though something was wrong.

I mean, the first time I'm rough with the dog, and it yelps, or runs away, or attacks me, I'd know I crossed a line. I'm not talking about rattling teeth or anything, but I wouldn't call it less than a slap, she loves it though.

I agree with demonstrating on the child that it could be hurting them, on the other hand, if you're going to slap my mom's German Shepherd in the face, and it removes your hand, don't come crying to me. :major

My cat loves it when I smack him on his butt. rolleyes Not hard, granted, because he's a cat and therefore much smaller than a dog, but he definitely likes it. Though if anyone else besides me tries it, he gets mighty cranky.

    My pet rocks

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/41/Pet_rock.jpg/250px-Pet_rock.jpg

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PET ROCK

All most pet rocks need is a warm bed of shredded paper, hay, sand or anything else warm. All pet rocks should have access to clean water throughout the day. Pet rocks should be given a bath monthly in clean water.
A small home should be provided for your pet rock with a shelter to hide in, a bed and food or water. Pet rocks can be trained although it is difficult but all pet rocks should be house trained. Pet rocks will benefit from a trip or walk at least once or twice a week to stop him/her becoming restless and eating the furniture. Most rocks are solitary creatures but many are wild party rocks and should be treated with a firm hand but should be allowed to occasionally have friends over for sleepovers
    MY PET ROCK IS ILL!
Most pet rocks become ill in their lifetime so All-purpose rock oil is a must. It treats all kind of rock illnesses from the common cold to over-sweating. A comfortable bed and rock oil is all they usually need to return to full health.
    RECIPE FOR ROCK OIL
Collect orange and pineapple juice, a pansy and water together. Dilute the juice with water and mix well. Put the mixture into a container of bottle cap and float the pansy on top. Leave the mixture in the rock's home and let him drink it at leisure*, if this does not seem to work add feta cheese to the mixture.
*Leave the mixture for an hour before taking it away, rocks will only drink tiny sips so it will not look different. If it has worked the rock should be back to normal. To prevent waste, this mixture should be made in a very small container or feeding bowl.
