Hi, my computer has been rebooting randomly and crashing out of games (sometime just a crash to the desktop or a full BSOD) for the last couple of weeks in addition to website redirects. When I ran spybot and malwarebytes both indicated that I had the smitfraud-c.generic trojan. I tried to remove it by us using both programs (rebooting when prompted) and combofix, but the trojan keeps coming back on every follow up scan. I had this trojan once several years ago and I was able to remove it then but not now (either I forgot how I did it back then or the trojan changed).

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Rerun RogueKiller and run a scan. After it finishes the scan, select the Registry tab and then select any of the below that exist and then click the Delete button.

    Then immediately reboot your PC.

After reboot, run a new scan with RogueKiller and save a log as in original instructions and attach the new log.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Right-click OTM.exe and select Run as administrator to run it.
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\Windows\svchost.exe
    C:\Users\Epiyon\AppData\Local\Adobe\28050\fqnqx.dll
    C:\Users\Epiyon\AppData\Local\Adobe\28050
    C:\Users\Epiyon\AppData\Local\Temp\{1DB77CF7-A0FD-4627-B53D-0666EA869B00}
    :Reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:

    • the the new RogueKiller log log
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

First I want to thank you for taking the time to help me with this problem as I have been freaking out about it the last few days. Also, since my initial post, but before doing what you instructed today, I ran spybot again just to scan and see if the trojan was removed while going through the procedure to generate a malewarebyte’s log (I didn't fix anything just scanned then closed it). It was still there but this time it, spybot, detected it as smitfraud-c.gp instead of smitfraud-c.generic. I don’t know if the name spybot detects the trojan as makes a difference since it still shows the problem file as the svchost.exe from previous scans, but I thought I’d mention it.
Secondly, is it okay to play online games like World of Warcraft on this computer (the affected one) during the cleaning process or would you recommend that I only use this computer when I’m following your cleaning procedures?
As far as how my computer is working now, I'm not too sure since I just completed the new scans, but if redirects/BSOD/game crashes keep happening between now and your next reply I will let you know.

Your infection has been removed according to your logs.

Please do the below in the order written:
    1. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    2. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    3. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
Now run a scan with Spybot and attach a log if it finds anything. You right click in the window when it finishes the scan and you will see options to save a log.

Everything is clear now (yay!). I can't tell you how much help you've been as this problem has been worrying me for the past few days. Also, I assume it is now okay to make online purchases and online banking transactions again, right?

    Yes.

Now that all is good, let me post the rest of the normal final instructions.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I don't think I'm out of the woods yet as malwarebytes just gave me a popup saying it has quarantined a trojan.hapili. This didn't com up during the spybot scan earlier. Is this the same trojan as before or something different? Let me know if I need to post more logs.

Don't know. Attach a log from Malwarebytes that shows this.
