Hi, sorry but I can't find the "New Thread" button anywhere so I'm replying to the most recent thread.

My son's Vista Home Premium PC is infected by "Vista Antivirus 2012" and it's so intrusive that I can't get to the MajorGeeks pages to download the tools to tackle it. The PC has AVG installed but inaccessible. Please help. Thanks

    John

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I downloaded and ran TDSSKiller, via CD-ROM. With this and a SuperAntiSpyware Quickie and CCleaner Registry cleaner I re-gained control of the machine. Then I ran through the whole Malware removal for Vista, including uninstalling AVG. SAS full scan and MB found problems but some tools appeared not to complete:
    - MG Tools - exception that could not be handled (but produced a long report)
    - Root Repeal - that ran, found hundreds of files locked by API, at least 2 others and then crashed before producing a report (have tried this 3 times with the same result). Here is the text from the log:
    ROOTREPEAL CRASH REPORT
    -------------------------
    Windows Version: Windows Vista SP2
    Exception Code: 0xc0000005
    Exception Address: 0x004cbf6b
Attempt to read from address: 0x00000004

I'm worried that this means there are still issues. It would be very kind if you would have a look at the logs:
    - TDSS from both times run
    - SAS
    - ComboFix

    Many thanks

    John

Here are the other logs, including the 3 attempts at running MG Tools, with re-boots in between.

    Thanks again

These logs are fairly clean. Only a few more traces to remove. I wouldn't worry about the RootRepeal problems. It's quite common for some PCs to have trouble running it. MGtools produced full logs so nothing to worry about there either.

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/4746/programsandfeatureswin7.gif From Programs and Features (via Control Panel), please uninstall the below:
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 30

http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/2648/hjt.gif Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double-clicking it (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Choose "Do a system scan only" and select the following lines but do not click fix until you exit all explorer windows and all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop -- but do not run it.
If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.

Save this file as CFScript.txt to your desktop. So now you should have both CFScript.txt and ComboFix.txt on your desktop.
Now use your mouse to drag CFScript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe and then release.
    http://softvisia.com/users/Night_Raven/Security/cfsdnd2.gif
    This will launch ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Allow ComboFix to update itself if prompted.
When ComboFix finishes, a log will be produced at C:\ComboFix.txt
Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach)

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/9049/javaz.gif Now install the current version of Sun Java from: jre-7u2-windows-i586.exe

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3214/baticonvista7.gif Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by right-mouse clicking it and then selecting Run as Administrator
This updates all of the logs inside MGlogs.zip.
When it is finished, attach C:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach)

Let me know how the PC is running afterwards.

Hi, some progress and some problems:

    - Uninstalled Java - okay (installed yesterday from link, thought it was the newest version)
    - MG Tools fixing 2 items - okay
    - ComboFix - ran through and completed 50 stages, then "deleting files" came up and it crashed citing a problem at "catchme.sys" about ~"page fault in non-page area". No log found
    - Didn't re-install Java in case we're not ready for it
    - MG Tools Get Logs - okay apart from same problem as before, copy attached

Sorry, I don't know enough to know if I've done enough :-o

The PC is running better anyway but as it has no anti-virus and the firewall is off I haven't done much with it. I uninstalled AVG and am thinking of installing Comodo as it seems to do everything and generally seems okay on our home XP machine. What do you think?

    Thanks

    John

Let's try this again with a different tool

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/1894/otl.gif Fix items using OTL by OldTimer

Double-click OTL.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/66/otlcustomfix.png text-field.
    Code:
    [COLOR="DarkRed"]:files[/COLOR]
    C:\Users\G\AppData\Local\2538by04g5v4x71l1ho2pp0871yam801
    C:\Users\G\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\2538by04g5v4x71l1ho2pp0871yam801
    C:\ProgramData\2538by04g5v4x71l1ho2pp0871yam801
    xcopy %temp%\smtmp\1 "%programdata%\start menu" /s /i /h /y /c
    xcopy %temp%\smtmp\2 "%appdata%\microsoft\internet explorer\quick launch" /s /i /h /y /c
    xcopy %temp%\smtmp\3 "%appdata%\microsoft\internet explorer\quick launch\user pinned\taskbar" /s /i /h /y /c
    xcopy %temp%\smtmp\4 "%programdata%\desktop" /s /i /h /y /c
    [COLOR="DarkRed"]:commands[/COLOR]
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]

    Now click the http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/407/otlrunfix.png button.
If the fix needed a reboot please do it.
Click the OK button (upon reboot).
When OTL is finished, Notepad will open. Close Notepad.
A log file will be located at C:\_OTL\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log, where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run.
Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach)

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3214/baticonvista7.gif Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by right-mouse clicking it and then selecting Run as Administrator
This updates all of the logs inside MGlogs.zip.
When it is finished, attach C:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach)

Hi, thanks for the OldTimer message. This ran as instructed and produced the attached logs (The OldTimer one appeared in the NotePad Window and I couldn't find an alternative so that's what I attached).

Many thanks, the PC feels faster again. :)

You're welcome. Just one more thing and then you can complete the final steps I have outlined below:

http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/2648/hjt.gif Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double-clicking it (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Choose "Do a system scan only" and select the following lines but do not click fix until you exit all explorer windows and all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - (no file)

After clicking Fix, exit out of Trend Micro HiJackThis - v2.0.4

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:

Take care and be safe! :)
