    Hi,
I'm running Windows Xp pro on a Dell Dimension 2400 Desktop.
The maximum Ram for this system is 1gig.

I Have the original 256MB, DDR,333,CL2.5 (PC2700U-2531-A1) that came with the system a couple of years ago. I'm trying to add 512mb Kingston memory.
    KVR400/512R
    512mb PC3200 CL3 184-Pin DIMM

The PC won't boot up or anything when I add the new ram..also it doesn't work if I try it with just the new 512ram. Have tried both slots.
    I also have tried: K-Byte 512MB PC2700 DDR Memory
With the same results. I ended up returning that RAM. Each person at each store that I made these purchases(Staples & Office Max)...both said it would work. The diagnostic lights on the back of the Dimension 2400 are showing an error. The light colors showing mean: Memory modules are detected, but a memory failure has occurred.
I've tried cleaning...also taken ram out (old ram) putting old and new back in,...trying different slot. As suggested on another site, I removed the CMOS battery and then put back in....still the computer will only work with the old ram stick . I have noticed that when I try the new ram either alone or with the old..that the power comes on the computer for about 5 seconds..then goes off and comes back on...but never making it to display anything on the monitor.

I've been careful to make sure not to cause any ESD to the computer

I'm at a loss as what to do now.
Does something in the bios have to be changed?
    I'd call myself " novice/intermediate,"

I havent been able to find answers on the Dell website. Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Do you know the full part number of the Kingston memory module ( post it if you can and we can check its full specs ) you have as my first thoughts are that as your Dell PC needs Unbuffered Non-ECC memory, the partial ID code links up with a long list of ECC ( Error Correcting Code ) modules that I would be guessing that are non compatible with the specs that dell list for memory for the Dimension 2400 in being the Non-ECC type.

A list of kingston memory modules approved for your DELL ( note: the start of the ID code is KTD over the KVR )

TBH the steps you have taken are just as I would have done, in trying the memory on its own, moving slots and reseting CMOS.... so I can only now suggest its the memory type.

You may also not have much of a benefit in using PC3200 over PC2700 as the PC3200 will like all mixed memory default to the speed of the slowest memory module, so I would advise if you are wanting to still use the 256mb of PC2700 then get a stick of PC2700 512mb ram at CL2.5.

    Hi Halo,
The Kingston 512 Ram is a Value Ram stick. The sticker on the Ram has several different numbers. I don't know which one is the part number  ...so here are the numbers that are there:

    99R0012-002.A01
    P790061-686013

    KVR400/512R
    740617076349
    2.6v

    AEPE1610619

    076349TW0P790061

On the box it came in it just says:
    KVR/512R
    Memory Upgrade Module
    512MB PC3200 CL3
    184- Pin DIMM

Then the bar code number : 076349TW0P790061
I can't seem to find it on the Kingston website.
If need be, I'll return this one and hopefully be able to find one that will work with my system. So if I get a different one that will work with the 256MB ...is this all I have to ask for :
    PC2700 512mb ram at CL2.5 ?

    Thanks

Found a little more info on that module and it is listed as Non-EEC which is suprising that it wont work, even when you have tested on its own, PC3200 is backwards compatible with your PC2700.

my only advice is to go with one of Kingstons recomendations for memory for the DELL Dimension 2400, either the....

    PC3200 code: KTD8300/512
    PC2700 code: KTD4550/512

Did check with dell to find out what type of memory your computer takes?

Thanks for the info. I returned the Ram and now will look for another 512mg stick. I havent decided if I should order online or try searching around locally. My concern is : if I buy online and it doesnt work, is it going to be much of a problem trying to return it?
If anyone has any advice/suggestions on buying ram online I'd like to hear.

    Thanks for the help :)

Woudl your local supplier have or be able to aquire for you the product IDs that both Kingston or Crucial list as being compatible with your Dell 2400 series PC? ( worth an ask )

    Kingston
    http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/con...l-Dimension+2400&distributor=0&submit1=Search

    Crucial
    http://www.crucial.com/store/listpa...abid=AM&model=Dimension+2400+Series&submit=Go

    or DELL
    http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A0136895&category_id=4325

I dont know how those prices compare to what you paid locally but buying from any of these suppliers above you should be able to return easily, but if in doubt send them an email to double check their returns policy... if you have an email reply its very good proof in the strange circumstance they play funny on a return, plus if you use your credit card, most CC companies will deal with disputes.
