I thought about getting a new computer, but I don't really see why I should, I use mine currently to do email/post on message boards and pron, and print school notes, etc

It's just not the desk space, old CRT also consumes more electricity. Moreover, they are said to be bad for your eyes (especially if you are short or long sighted).

Don't know enough about monitors to advice you, all I know that some of the cheapest TFT/LCD (new) ones are pretty awful.

Hey guys spotted this in passing, what do yu guys think is better, L.C.D or C.R.T - the korean professional gamers aint using lcd screens in all the matches big or small.

Well to me old school the crt still wins, although I have a 40inch lcd samsung tv with 4 sec response time for big screen gaming.

I was told C.R.T its "basically an xray machine", so sitting too close to one of those all day, even behind the lead mask of the crt (the reason why the screen is so dark when a c.r.t is powerd off wont do you any favours. (tip want to get a good CRT look at it with the power off / see how dark the tube is the darker the better) Just indicates its a better quality tube and masking - doesnt gaurantee focus or brightness - to check the focus leave a crt on for approx two hours before saying yes i'll buy that especially second hand.

watchntv, a computer doesn't care what brand LCD is hooked up to it.
Example: I have an extremely old Dell (700MHz) in the basement. I hooked up a 19" Westinghouse LCD with no problem.

Dont know about that one, have a Samsung 40 inch, when i first used the lcd (XP Pro SP2) at the contextual menu at the bottom - right click on the desktop, was a play on my Samsung well,... cool obviously it was designed for this, lets do what it says and selected the play on my samsung option...

Well this prevented me from using the CRT resolutions I liked, and for any games which had a use desktop resolution things resized to LCD settings exclusively o.k to be expected,... but some games on the old box didnt like what ever the hang 860 by 1150 forget something non standard crt setting... basically it forced me to use a higher resolution on some games that just didnt like or ran slower at a higher resolution... bugger... snatched defeat from the jaws of victory... again.

At least thats my two cents really dont have much else to say about LCD's except sometimes the lights are on but no ones home, on a few of these I have geeked at, then it might be fine for a few days, latest drivers and appropriate refresh rates software loaded etc.. they just dont seem to last as long... this doesnt mean to say I dont like them.. I think they are a little easier on the eye as far as viewing and the small foot print is a blessing, however if I could by a flat screen CRT the same price and size as an L.C.D then I probably would prefer to, as they appear to me to have superior color and quality... but thats only one geeks opinion.

A 40" lcd is probably both a computer monitor and a tv - that is a different matter entirely so I would not use that as an example of something that doesn't work out of the box.

I think there's some truth in that because my brother would get an epilepsy attack being even behind one, not just in front of it. Mind you, even a telehone would sometimes send him into fits. I dread to think how would he cope these days if he was still alive - the epilepsy killed him at young age - with all the electronics we surround ourselves? How many people do you know without a mobile phone? Well, you might find more of them in America than in Europe, I believe.

so you based CRTS and LCDS,
    what makes LCDs so awful?

how do CRTs "hurt" your eyes?

I have three brands of LCDs in the house. My preference Samsung (I have two of those). My advice, go to a big box store and look at the monitors on display. Write down the brands that seem better for your eyes.

    Hey World

not being rude or anything untoward, but re previous post to my first reply in this thread...

    RE:

Good choice of lcd's plodr, Samsung are one of the top lcd makers.

The only thing this had was a quick response time and good contrast brightness ratios, and the whole reason why I paid a little bit extra for it.

But that is what i encountered, when i plugged in my computer to the T.V, out of the box...as it were.

If I do not know something or little about something I always say so in my reply, and try to help people by offering what little snipets of knowledge i do have relating to the querry...

It is still and lcd screen, as is a relevant part of this thread, ... i guess, regardless of its intended use... and also never advertised as a computer screen, or I'm positive the salesperson would have mentioned that, and probably try to charge more for it lol:-D

I'm talking purely about the picture quality. The cheapest LCD monitors are worse than my trinitron CRT - just like when the technology was new and LCD monitors cost the earth. I am not against LCDs etc, I've got three of them at my home, but I was sad when my CRT died, after ten years' of near continuos use. For a long time it was definitely my choice of monitor when doing image editing.

What I read from one of the respected tech websites, is that a research in Japan had suggested a possible link with CRT monitors and glaucoma. Of course I cannot find the article I read any more, the one that states expressively CRTs - I remember reading that not enough is known of the effects of digital monitors as the technology is so young... The nearest to the article I read is found here:

    http://health.dailynewscentral.com/content/view/140/62

CRTs definitely seem to cause more eye strain and tired eyes than LCDs, probably something to do with CRT's refresh rate... At the time I went for higher than average refresh rate for that reason, apart from choosing otherwise the best quality I could afford, and I'm glad I did. What a difference it made compared to the ones in college! :)

I think it's best to try and see monitors in use first if you can, to find what suits you: images and ech specs don't tell the whole story.

    I concur with claptrap,

I too have had a couple of flat screen CRT monitors 21 inch a sony and a nec, so these arent exaclty 21inch full screen viewing, but like claptrap I too was sad:cry when i sold one and the other wasnt used for over a year and just never went again, I had tried leaving it face down in storage, like i heard you are supposed to do with CRTs especially with the biguns when not in use for any length of time...never mind

if your are looking for an lcd
the refresh rate in HZ is a big player
the contrast and brightness is another player
if it is 1080i or 1080p - 1080p is what you want if its in the budget.
Plasmas apparently whe they fail it can cost upto two thirds the price and are suposedly prone to a bit of screen burn if you use consols games etc for long periods of time... never seen this myself tho...

anyway budget / price or quality is always the driving force / factor in any sensible purchase.

    l8r guy
after this its the features like hdmi, does it have a radio or can play files from a flash drive, i hear some of them youu can even just plug an SD card into and start view the pictures etc... but no idea of which models sorry...
    I like Samsung my self
