True, way too many decent items end up in the landfill instead of going to those it would benefit

In Australia, in most/all states, we have a specific coloured recycle wheelie bin, or bin lid. We have green wheelie bins, with green lids for normal garbage, and green wheelie bins with yellow lids for recycling. Colours may differ in other states, but that is how it is in my city.

You can only deposit bottles, papers and lots of other specified stuff, for recycling. in the yellow lidded bin.

The recycled bins go to a separate dropoff spot at the tip (usually a building) where they are inspected and saved for recyling possibility, or reselling.
Then the leftovers are dumped into the normal landfill.

The landfill owner, usually the City Council, augment their budget with the returns from recycling, or reselling.

Work gave me a Dell netbook. Safety award. Within 2 weeks the keyboard dies. Hard drive died within 3 months, M/B went south next week, they say it took out the new drive, 2nd new H/D. Also went south. Sent into the repair place 6X within a year.

Repair place always sent it back with one big C drive. No restore or diognostic partitions or programs installed. Never fixed it right. I can see why it was trashed. The wanted me to buy an extended warranty. Why buy one if they couldn't fix it right the 1st 9x. Just my experience with Dell.
